The lack of 4K content is the only bummer for me right now. But I read somewhere they will be rolling it out over the next year. I mean it’s the standard now for every streaming service to offer at least some 4K content.
Right now, that's my number one issue. Secondly, I just got done browsing every movie and tv show from "a to z" and it's really not that bad of an initial lineup of programming. I need to check to see if each movie is in its OAR. Anyhow, I'm going back to bed and will browse some more later this afternoon. I did find the following toons:

  • The Flintstones
  • The Jetsons
  • Johny Quest
  • Looney Tunes
  • Popeye
  • Tom and Jerry
  • Yogi Bear

All looks good to me. Plenty of choices in HD. For FIOS users who still can't get TCM in HD except by using their streaming app this is great. One day when traveling resumes this will be the app to have on a plane or in the airport waiting for a flight. I am guessing US users won't be able to access the app outside the US. Not that many people will be flying internationally anytime soon.

I signed up for the week trail but, I'm not sure I'll stick around. The content looks good but, I'm just not happy about the price. I think $14.99 is too pricey and I don't want to encourage other providers do follow suit. The only other services I pay that much for are Netflix (which includes 4K at that price) and Amazon Prime (which includes all the Amazon shipping perks). Netflix is getting close to being chopped for price, one more price increase will probably do it.

Anyway, may give it a month or 2 since I just canceled CBS AA and HBO Max is just 5 more dollars. There is definitely a good selection of content, better then the overall launch content of Disney+ IMO, outside of a massive hits like Star Wars and Marvel. There are definitely more classics that interest me on this service vs Disney+. Man, I just don't like the price.

Since it was mentioned that Warner Archive titles available through HBO Max are not the latest restored versions of the films, what about classic films released outside the archive such as the "Wizard of Oz", "Gone With The Wind", "Christmas Story", "North By North West". "Philadelphia Story " etc.
For those who had the old Warner Archives streaming service, did that service provide the restored Warner Archive versions of the films or did that service predate when the archive started putting out restored versions of films? When the archive started they just put out films without any restoration. Just they best version they had available.

What a joke launch. I get an email yesterday saying my HBONOW App would auto update. It didn't and the HBOMAX is not available on Roku. I thought they had reached an agreement with Roku. Since around 30-35% streamers use Roku and another 10-15% use Amazon devices to stream I expect a huge amount of cancellations for this. I know I am heading over to cancel right now. I doubt I would have kept it very long anyways. Not enough to interest me that's why I cancelled HBONOW. I have Boomerang and as I suspected they are not adding anything Boomerang doesn't have. I am mainly interested in old movies and tv shows. The handful of old movies they have I already own. I didn't thing they would add many 50's -70's TV shows and it doesn't look like they added any. I will stick with Disney+ even if they don't add enough old content at least there was a lot more at launch.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion but HBOMAX certainly has a lot of classic films at its launch and additional films will be added and current available films removed over time,
The fact that it is not available on ROKU and Amazon Fire TV is a problem I assume this will be resolved soon, like every other carriage dispute on TV. Just the nature of the business these days with fights over money.

TVline has an article that Warner had to buy back the rights to the Harry Potter films from Universal in order to include them on HBOMAX. Seems Universal has the rights to all things Harry Potter through 2025.

I'm very impressed by the classic films on HBOMAX. I checked ROMANCE ON THE HIGH SEAS and STRIKE UP THE BAND. Clearly they are using to new restored prints that are being used for the new Warner Archive Blu Rays. GIRL CRAZY which is in SD on other streaming apps , is in beautiful HD which must be from a new master.

I never really understood why WB sold the right to Harry Potter. I can understand selling the theme park rights but, the movies? That's their Star Wars or Marvel.

Hairspray (2007) is in 5.1! The iTunes version that you can buy is still only in stereo.

HBO has always been $14.99 and that was for less content than we woke up to today. If it was going to cause other providers to follow suit, wouldn't that have happened by now?

Huh? The only thing they sold was the rights for them to air on NBC. All 8 movies are on HBO Max.

I have HBO MAX installed on my Apple TV but awaiting instructions from Verizon Fios on how to activate it with my current HBO account.

They are supposedly offering it free to HBO subscribers but to date, nothing from Verizon on how to set it up

I think you just hit "sign in" then follow the instructions. You will eventually tell it you subscribe to Fios and you will enter your Fios credentials.

Sign in with what?

Your Verizon account?

Your HBOGO account?

I just created a new account so far

Hit "sign in" on the ATV app. It will give you a code and prompt you to go to a web address on your phone/computer. Enter the code at the web address. It will then ask you who your provider is. You tell it Verizon Fios then enter your Verizon name/password. That should do it.

Go to the HBOMAX website and create an HBOMAX account using your Verizon information. Once that is setup go to Apple TV and sign into your HBOMAX account.
