This argument reminds me of when I worked at a video store in the late 80's. Parents were constantly coming to the counter with slasher films for their 12-year old kids and asking me "Do you any of these have any nudity or bad language in them?"
Apparently cursing and women's breasts are harmful to kids but an axe to someone's skull is OK.
The most surprising swearing I've heard on a CD was Paul Simon's "Songs from the Capeman". It is from a concept/musical thing that he wrote about Salvador Agron, who killed two kids in a New York street fight. The swearing sounds really odd coming from the smooth, usually family-oriented, aging Simon. It's not in every song, but I'm talking things like "F-ing Peurto Rican dope dealing punks, get your s--- brown a-- out of here". Of course the whole point is to "keep it real", so it isn't completely out of place. Its a great album, by the way. Kind of a hidden gem that everyone seems to have passed over.
its kind of strange how the avril dueldisc works in terms of the videos. they still use the mtv censored version of "don't tell me", but very surpringly, the line "all the things you hide from me, all the shit you do" is there full and uncut, anyone know why that is? i thought mostly video's that are on dvd, are the censored mtv versions.
Here is the one that I never got: There have been all kinds of the editing for radio that has gone on over the years (like "funky S--- going down in the city" or the complete removal of the "S--- has hit the fan" verse of Lawyers, Guns, and Money). How is it that several obvious instances of the F word go unedited for years in The Who's "Who Are You"?
radio programers are either too lazy to take them out, or they never have noticed. (also take the infamous "goody good bull shit" in "money" (although just recently a local rock station in baltimore is now cutting out the bad word)
Sorry for bumping this thread. I know i might sound like a tool or a troll (especially when i swear constantly when with friends ect) but kind of surprising especially when i didn't reallize it after all these years. I was reading the article in rolling stone magazine about the rollings stones album "exile in main street". they do a track by track rundown, and with track 4 "casino boogie" and there's the line "dierich movies, close up boogies, kissing c**t in cannes". Mainly surprised me because I've listened to that album many times and never noticed.
Also noticed that many of the indie labels that distribute heavy metal albums, don't bother with the pa stickers (i bought a Six Feet Under album at walmart .)
Regardless of what others around here think, yes I've been surprised by offensive language on some CDs. Mainly that Harry Nilsson song that was previously mentioned, especially considering the type of music he sang... For modern CDs it's not surprising, it's more expected in certain circles & genres... but then again I've gone so far away from what's played on the radio (studio/business men-driven, boring, unimaginative, repetitive melodies/chord structures) for the most part that the independent artists/music I've drifted toward are in another ballgame.
come on , you gotta love a song where the chorus is... strapping young lad "you suck" Tell me how much they fuckin' suck! HELL YEAH THEY FUCKIN' SUCK Even your girlfriend fuckin' sucks! HELL YEAH SHE FUCKIN' SUCKS Oh, fuck you, you fuckin' fuck! HELL YEAH YOU FUCKIN' SUCK Ah, tell me how much you fuckin' suck... HELL YEAH WE FUCKIN' SUCK Hell yeah you fuckin' suck... Hell yeah you fuckin' suck!
I still remember the first time I heard "Not Now John" by Pink Floyd and nearly did a double take at the opening chorus. Totally threw me off given within the context of the album to suddenly hear David Gilmour scream out "f**k all this" and the like.
