I just up graded my Semi Home Theater with a Samsung LN-S4696D LCD HDTV and connected it to Digital Cable TV (HDMI connection) with the Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300HD Digital Video Recorder (Cox Communications). What I would like to do is replace my old Pioneer VSX-D702S Reciever with a modern one that uses HDMI connections and can keep my current Speaker setup which uses center, right, left, rear right and left and a powered subwoofer. I don't wish to go to a seven speaker layout.

I would like to keep the cost of this new receiver to less than 1200 dollars if possible.

Unfortunately, you'll be hard pressed to find a 5.1 reciever with a HDMI in/out option. However, all 6.1 and 7.1 receivers will work in 5.1 mode.

    Yamaha RX-V1600 at ~$1100
    Pioneer Elite VSX-80TXV at ~$650
    Denon AVR 2807 at ~$1100

I'm sure all of thes can be had cheaper.
