I'm not sure if anyone else has posted about this site before (did a search and came up with nothing), but I was completely shocked when I saw it. How is this practice even legal???

I've read about it before, but hadn't seen the website before. To each their own, I would just wait until my children are old enough to see the movies unedited. These movies weren't meant for children in the first place.

Of course, I'm sure there are some adults who would like the edited versions too, and for some reason won't exercise their right not to watch something.

Given Hollywood's obsession with copyrights, I too find it odd if this is legal.

(contemplating the apoplexy of Julie K as she ponders the effect of Tot Tyranny on one of her favorite zombie movies).

I question the responsibility of parents who think that editing out the nudity and violence of a film automatically makes it suitable for children.

Myself, I'm holding out for the 30-second cuts of Robocop and Showgirls.

Hey, I think I can make a ton of money. I've got the new Black Box DVD, guaranteed not to show any offensive material whatsoever. It's just like a regular dvd player, except it has NO outputs at all. Put in even the raunchiest porno flick and you can safely watch it with your young children right in the room. Nothing offensive will show up. We guarantee it. And it only costs a few dollars more than a regular dvd player.

I think this is an offshoot of a video store that opened a few years ago that rented edited videos. I believe the MPAA tried a lawsuit and failed, but the DGA did find success in that all of the directors of the edited movies have a right under DGA rules to be made aware of the cut versions and to have their name removed and replace by Alan Smithee if they so wish.

Just one more thing to try and absolve parents of their responsibility to be parents. If you don't want your children to see such subject matter, don't rent/buy the damn movies in the first place. [IMG]
I read something about a theater that was editing the films they were showing (I think they took the sex scene out of "Titanic"). This was a no-no and the suit was successful because the film reels in theaters are merely rented and are still the property of the studios, so I guess it was considered vandalism in that case. Different rules apply if you make the edits yourself to a copy you've purchased, I guess. But, once again, I say why buy/rent them in the first place? Stick to Disney and Barney.

Marc, I think you should take them up on their offer. I'm curious as well how a film like The Godfather can be "toned" down. It should make for an interesting study and great discussion on this board.

Just to update everyone, I requested a copy of Fight Club. I have seen this movie at least 10 times, so I should have no trouble picking out the differences.

...or a "silent edit" of Goodfellas [IMG][IMG][IMG]. I really wanted to watch that one, but I just couldn't handle all the profanity.
