I don't believe so..

I thought his performance in Ed Wood was fantastic and would have to qualify as becoming the closest role to win the Oscar.

Johnny Depp is one of the greatest actors of our time imo.

As much as he deserved a nomination for Ed Wood, there were just too many great performances that year for him to have a chance. I'm surprised that Martin Landau even got nominated for that same movie, with movies (and their performances) like Pulp Fiction, Forrest Gump, and The Shawshank Redemption competing.
