I was just wondering if this has been done, I think it could look nice, anyone try???
Check the SVS site. I believe they offer it as a custom finish.
ya, I have seen those, but I was wondering if any DIY'ers have done it yet, and if it is possible.
It's certainly possible. Of course that's based on your ablity to make the seam in the veneer disappear. A larger diameter tube (>15") would require two seams, assuming a 48" wide sheet of veneer.
I can see the names now:
Tree Trunk Sub
If you did this I would suggest buying the NBL veneer from Tape-Ease. It comes with a wood backer and would work better than the paperbacked veneer. Since sonotube has grooves in it the grooves would probably telegraph through the paperbacked stuff. Telegraphing is much less of an issue with NBL.
P.S. I checked out my 11 sheets of 10-mil paperbacked veneer (5 oak, 5 maple, 1 cherry) and they look pretty damn good!
