As a Brit this is a part of our film going heritage.

I was wondering if anyone owned this set and had any comments.

DeepDiscountDVD has the first 12 movies for $59

I just want to know that they are not awful before I splurge.

    Many thanks
    Rob

Yes, I bought it on release. Barebones, but I had no complaints about the picture quality (anamorphic). Those 12 include my favourites, Carry On Cruising and Carry On Cleo. I really wish Anchor Bay would release the remaining ones, with the extras from the recent R2 SE's.

If you like the films, then $59 is an excellent deal.

    here
    and
    here

are a couple reviews on the set.
Anchor Bay is usually a very reliable outfit, imo.
i would expect them to look quite decent considering age, etc.

Except for "Carry on Cabby", the transfer quality of the region 1 box set are generally excellent, and I would not hesitate to recommend them. However, the balance of the series are controlled by Carlton, so it is likely that MGM would be the distributors of any future region 1 release. All the titles in the region 1 boxset were originally released in England by Anglo Amalgamated, now controlled by Canal + and distribution switched to Rank for the remainder of the series (Carlton).
