Michael, from what I hear he did NOT light the opening, as it was reshot very late in the game after he had left.

Did you see it theatrically? It was a beehive of grain, and even Super35 can't take the blame for that. Seriously, I've seen student films shot on 16mm that were lit better than that opening, and I'm comparing on a similar size screen here

If that's so, then I guess we don't know who's responsible for the look of that sequence. Regardless, it still looked fine to me. In fact, it was a part of the film I particularly enjoyed; things looked old and artificial and stylized, and everything had a kind of story book haze that effectively established a mood for the rest of the movie. Maybe it wasn't intentional; maybe it's not the way you (or someone else) would have lit it. But as far as I'm concerned, it worked.

Sorry, but that's how I saw it. Maybe it'll hit me differently on the DVD (my copy's still hung up in the mail somewhere).

The DVD has the advantage of lower resolution and quite a bit of DVNR applied. It looks decent, but not up to the rest of the film in terms of image detail.

Stylistically I agree the opening is very satisfying
