really...it could be possible for JKR to write that in since Dumbledor never details the battle for the ring.
....what if .....he killed for it (in self-defense and for the greater good: stopping Voldemort)
as a moral man he would consider it "murder" of a sorts.
In desperation for the future he could have used the lamentable outcome of taking "resonsiblity" for a death to create his own Horcrux....it only takes one repository. Only Voldermort had dared thought to apply this unmentionable ancient evil to split a soul to seven, (a powerful number with additional safety in redundant numbers).
