I just wanted to post some information on the Hammer Vampire Collection which has just come out in the UK (region 2). This DVD set contains the films Countess Dracula, Twins Of Evil & Vampire Circus and retails for 19.99 (around $30 USD). All 3 films are 16:9 Widescreen. I ordered mine through Bensonsworld for 15.99 (free shipping) which comes out to a great price of $8 a film (sorry I haveo't received it yet so I can't tell you what the quality is like).
Twins of Evil is the follow-up to Lust for a Vampire which has already been released in region 1 by Anchor Bay. The first part of the trilogy The Vampire Lovers is going to be released in R1 in 2003. Twins is my favorite of the 3 so I'm really happy to see it out on DVD.

Reading in another, UK-based forum, that apparently the transfers are quite nice!

Perhaps you would be kind enough to give us your opinion when you have the discs, Jay.

Hmm, buy this, or wait to see if Anchor Bay picks it up in the US....decisions, decisions. I just got burned on buying the R2 Casino Royale figuring that MGM wasn't going to issue it and defame their own franchise....silly me! So I guess I'll wait a bit and see what happens.

That makes me feel better Bleddyn, thanks.

Mark - I was wondering the same thing, but I'm not sure who has the rights to these films in the US. These titles are not listed on Anchor Bay's website as future titles so , they may be owned by Universal & Fox so it may be awhile before we see them. At $8 each, I decided I'd rather own them now and not wait for whenever.

THE VAMPIRE LOVERS is forthcoming in 2003 from MGM as part of their Midnight Movie series, and will include a commentary with Ingrid pitt which has already been recorded. I'm hearing the film may even be 100% restored this time (the recent VHS from MGM had several scenes re-instated but material is still missing).

It is possible VAMPIRE CIRCUS, TWINS OF EVIL and COUNTESS DRACULA might end up with them, but there is no indication at this time that that might happen. Image released them on laserdisc back in 1998, and they pressed very few copies. I was one of the lucky ones to get them all new.

The R2 set can purchased through Amazon UK for just 16.69 pounds, ($25.00 US as of today) which includes airmail shipping I got mine from them in less than a week after placing the order!

I haven't had anytime to really dive into it as yet.

I know Image released these on LD a few years back and if I'm not mistaken they had the logo "Hallmark" on them. I know Carlton released the DVDs in R2, but I don't know who'd do them in R1. Since I just ordered the R2 set, I'm sure they'll be announced in R1 next week.

It has been mentioned on many Horror DVD sites that MGM now has the rights to these as well as Hands of the Ripper and that they are looking for good and complete prints of these. I believe this is true and not just rumor because MGM was asked this at the last HTF Chat and they acknowleged them but said they were looking for suitable prints. So nothing is official but I would expect to see them in 2003 or 2004 with the recent popularity of Hammer on DVD and the releases will almost certainly be better (Uncut, New Transfers, possible extras). I have the Laserdiscs too so those will do for now. I would rather not have to deal with a region free player and Pal Speed-Up issues.

The Karnstein trilogy 'The Vampire Lovers', 'Lust for a Vampire' and 'Twins of Evil' would have made a great Hammer Horror Box Set, sadly it was not meant to be.
Twins of Evil is the best of the three IMO, the most enjoyable, the delicious semi-naked Collinson twins being 4 plus points in its favor.[IMG]
Vampire Circus is also great fun, more blood and gratuitous nudity, aaah those were the days.
Countess Dracula not so good, no vampires, just mad countess Ingrid Pitt having blood baths, literally.
They should have got rid of Countess Dracula and added 'Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter' instead, hugely enjoyable romp, which screamed for a sequel and didn't get one, shame!

Thanks for the news, Jay. I will continue to support all of the Hammer Films releases. BTW, I agree with the others that Twins of Evil is the gem of this group.

Although you won't find this info anywhere, MGM will be releasing the Carlton/Hammer films in Region 1 next year. Once their legal issues were cleared up MGM had to wait for restoration of these titles in the UK. This is one reason why The Vampire Lovers was pushed back to 2003. MGM will be releasing this alongside Carlton's four films.

I'll be interested to know what AR these are being released at in the UK (since the recent WB Hammer releases were overly cropped, apparently).

I received my R2 boxset this afternoon. I'm going to watch the "Twins of Evil" tonite. I'll probably hold off & wait to buy M-G-M's R1 "Vampire Lovers". [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

--You're missing out on some stuff that may never reach R1. As to PAL speedup, that debate rages on. ---

But why not just wait till next year for the Region One releases that will be cheaper and more than likely better quality.

Ok I agree that alot of stuff on other Regions may never to DVD in Region 1 but I was just referring to these Hammer titles that we know are coming soon but just have not been officially announced yet. I would rather just stick with my LD's and wait for the region 1's rather than buy a region free player, import these disks and then probably end up rebuying the region 1 versions later due to better quality or extras.

You can't really complain about the cost. I got this set for just $26.00 including airmail shipping form amazon UK. I'll get my $26.00 worth out of it even if R1 versions come out next year.
