Here's the discs I'm showing this year:
Pet Sematary
American Werewolf in London
The Frighteners
Dracula 2000
The Thing (1982)
All good choices IMHO.

No mention at all of the classic Universal Monsters movies? What would Halloween be with Frankenstein, Bride Of Frankenstien, Dracula, the Wolf Man, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, etc.? Sure, the transfers are a little rough, but most of these movies are nearly 70 years old. They are also a lot of fun.

Young Frankenstein
House On Haunted Hill (1959) (Get the WB edition of the original "House." Roan has a similar DVD, but the WB edition is excellent. WB's edition is the only one in matted 1.85:1)
The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (Image version)
Nosferatu (Image SE)
13 Ghosts
The Tingler
Frankenstein (Universal)
Dracula (Universal)

I agree, the ending to the remake of House on Haunted Hill ruined what was otherwise an excellent, modern day, ball-to-the wall horror movie. I really dug this one up until the ending. Still, an excellent DVD purchase.
I must also recommend Carrie. One of my favorites to watch around Halloween.
If you're gonna go with a classic Universal monster, go for Creature from the Black Lagoon.

What about Silence of the Lambs? Maybe not quite a "halloween" movie as far as ghouls and ghosts but quite scary nonetheless. I would second Sleepy Hollow for a more classic ghost story - I consider it a reference dvd as far as audio/video in the horror genre.

Well, there are so "many" to choose from:
Children of The Corn
Dead Alive (as stated above) --comedy--
Halloween (Exceptional)
Hellraiser 1 & 2 (good gore)
Night Of The Living Dead (original)(utmost)
Pet Sematary
Re-Animator --?--
Sleepaway Camp --WTF?--
wink.gif

Stir of Echoes --eh--
*And not even hinted* The Amytiville Horror
*Deadites* Evil Dead 1 & 2 & 3 --COMEDY--
The Frighteners --mix--
The Omen
The Texas Chainsaw...you know
What Lies Beneath...good jumpy points
A Nightmare on Elm Street --reference quality and scary--
Final Destination
The Lost Boys
****The Exorcist**** original, or your choice
wink.gif

Horror, comedy, satire at its best and worst; take your pick.
Enjoy.
