We've been treating our 1 1/2 old Boston Terriers right eye for the past 2 months. It basically discharging fluid that is turning the white fur on his snout brownish where the path of the fluid runs. We've gone through 2 different antibiotic eyedrops/gel and it still persists. The last trip to the vet, they indicated that he has small hairs growing on the inside of his eyelid and that they can remove them by freezing them off while he's knocked out. Anyone ever hear of this problem or procedure? If so, is it necessary? Dangerous?

I have heard of a cat having it. It can lead to permanently scratched eyes. I would definitely get them removed ASAP. But does freezing them off get rid of them permanently?

This is a genetic defect and if you bought your dog with papers the breeder may pay for the procedure.

Hmm, permanent scratches would be no good at all. We have a 3o'clock appointment today with an eye specialist to make sure that the hairs are indeed the problem.

BTW, we bought him from a kennel club here in Denver who got him from a breeder, but the health guarantee has since run out.

my shih-tzu also has this, but wifey says it's normal for this breed. i also read in a book it's not a big deal - the book even listed some recipe to help clean it off the fur.

just curious why it would be bad in other dogs. must just be a breed thing ... ???

Ted, it's not the discharge from the eye that's so bad, it's the scratching of the hairs on the cornea. Can lead to abrasions, infection, corneal ulceration, corneal melting, loss of eye. Not to mention the pain (you've had a hair in your eye, right?)

Well, the wife just called and gave me the report. The vet eye specialist said no worries, he just has hyper active tear ducts. So I asked her why is one side discolored and the other not? To what I got the always predictable answer, "I didn't ask him that". He did say though that the little hairs weren't an issue. I think I may seek a 2nd opinion based on what you had to say about distichia Julian.

Thanks The Ted!

We have a shih-tzu too. She is great, friendly, lovable, & smart. Don't want to call her a pet, because she is much more.

all I can say is.. after dropping 300 bucks on my mutt @ the vet, plus the hot interns, I'm in the wrong biz.

wonder if you can get into vet school with a BS in aerospace crap.
