At 32 years of age, I finally had my first wreck. My girlfriend and I were driving to the theater to see Black Hawk Down. We live in a small town so the nearest theater is a good hour away. All I can say is I don't want to do that again! Everyone was OK. But a word of advice...if someone in front of you has their blinker on to turn to the right, never go around them. They may want to turn in the opposite direction!

Something similar happened to my Brother in law. He was following this lady and all of the sudden she started slowing in her lane and finally came to a complete stop. He began to pass her on the left and she suddenly turned left, right in front of him. He completely totalled her vehicle and bent his front bumper pretty good (no one was hurt though).

I know how you feel. I just wrecked my car Friday. I slid on some snow through a right curve into the oncoming lane and had a head on accident. Nobody was hurt, but my car is in bad shape. I didn't have rental on my insurance either so I thought I was SOL. But a dealership where I have a new car on order from a few weeks ago let me have a brand new Grand Am for as long as I need. They saved me a lot of trouble and money with their excellent customer service.

Hope you have as much luck dealing with the consequences as I have.

Why do people have such difficulties turning left? I was once driving in the left-hand lane when a guy in the right-hand lane decided to turn left...right in front of me. He didn't even bother to signal. When the cops came, not only did he claim that he signaled, but that he was just doing a lane change when I hit him. Luckily, he cop didn't buy it considering that our cars were perpendicular when we hit.

People turning left from the right-hand lane seems to be a common problem. A few weeks ago I narrowly avoided an accident due to this problem. People just don't seem to be able to look around them. I saw this guy in Wal-Mart yesterday walking forward while having his head turned to the right the whole time. He ran into countless other people. All I could think was 'Dear God, he can't even watch where he's going while walking, and soon he's gonna get in a car and do this while driving 50mph?'

Sounds like the whole "turn left while signaling right" thing is more common than I thought! The woman was old and apparently lost. I will say one thing...that Cadillac of hers was pretty tough. She drove hers afterwards. My little Mitsubishi Eclipse didn't fare as well.
I'm still pissed that I didn't get to see Black Hawk Down! [IMG]

My first wreck involved being rear ended by a car going 40 mph. I was stopped behind a long train of cars filling three lanes of traffic, unable to turn in either direction.

I looked in my rear view and saw a car coming up behind me, really really fast. It was like watching a little 2X6 horror movie. Before I knew it I was flying across the three lanes, miraculously not hitting any other cars. The entire rear portion of my car was obliterated (along with everything in my trunk).

The guy who hit me tried to run but was corralled into the parking lot by some good samaritans. He then took out a crowbar and... tried to somehow 'undo' the damage he had caused. He was a big burly guy so I didn't stand in the way when he fled the scene before the cops arrived.

It took them a year to bust him... he had his license revoked. He was uninsured and running from the law.... I developed a nervous disorder from the accident and somehow I was only reimbursed a very small amount.

Funny how some people can reap millions of dollars from getting coffee burns on their thighs, and yet others are denied basic compensation for such a horrific accident.

I've had 2 accidents and I'm only 22. One was a rear-ender from a classmate when I was in HS. The other was, you guessed it, a lady who got into my lane from the right. The right side of my maxima was totaled but her old Buick was barely crumpled in. When I got it back from the body shop, I noticed it's nosier, the door doesn't set off the interior light, and opening the passenger side door just doesn't feel the same. [IMG]
Todd- I'm guessing you're at fault for this, or is she?

The officer never said who was at fault. He basically just took everyone's statement and that was that. I'm supposed to call this week and have a copy of the police report sent to my insurance company. With my luck I'll probably be at fault. [IMG]

Had nearly the same thing happen to me in my neighborhood. Was driving a safe distance behind someone and they pulled all the way over to the curb on the right and seemed to be slowing to a stop, so I proceeded to pass them. Just as I was about to get there, she turned in front of me to go into her driveway (on the left side of the road). No signal, no nothing.

Why is it that people turning left so often feel the need to swing far to the right?

Steve, I've come to the conclusion that, for the most part, people are just stupid. How else do you explain things like turning left while signaling right, buying Bose speakers, purchasing pan-n-scam, and listening to boy bands? [IMG]

I've only been responsible for one accident and I wasn't even behind the wheel! About five years ago, I was at a gas station filling up. Finished up and was starting to pull away from the pump when I looked in the side-view mirror and realized I'd left the gas cap on the trunk. Threw the car in park and got out to replace the cap. Since the car had stiff hinges, the door closed behind me. It also had a door locking system that operated in conjuction with the transmission. The doors would automatically lock when it was shifted into gear. Well, you can imagine what happened next...

As I was screwing the cap back on, the car started rolling backwards. It had slipped into reverse! And the doors had locked. I couldn't get in and had nothing to break the window with. Behind it was the gas station parking lot and....traffic. Lots of it! There were a bunch of cars stopped at a stop light. Well, the car continued rolling backards and I was screaming like a lunatic for people to move their cars. There was too much traffic and people had no room to move. BANG! My rear bumper crashed into the right front quarter panel of a car. The woman driving and her daughter got out screaming bloody murder after they got smacked at about 5 mph. The police showed up and told the lady she couldn't move her car because mine was still in gear! It would have rolled directly across the street and into the wall of a Walgreen's. I told the cops that I'd smash the window, but they said that was foolish. They called a locksmith who used a slimjim to get in.

I make damn sure I ALWAYS use the emergency brake now when I get out with the engine running. Good thing too, because a month after the accident, something similar happened to the transmission when I was at the video store. I had the brake on, so the car didn't move. I was locked out with the engine running, however. Had to have a friend of mine bring my spare keys from my house. A few months later, I decided to ditch the car. It was bad luck. Hehe.

In the end, nobody got hurt. I have no idea how much my insurance company paid to the lady that was hit. She complained of "back pain" but my agent said they would prove that to be baseless. I had to pay an accident surcharge on my policy for three years, but I guess I was lucky the car didn't take out a gas pump or something.

32 and never had a wreck? Damn, what's wrong with you! I'm 22 and have been in 6. Two were my fault, but could have been avoided if I wasn't an idiot back in my middle teens!!!

I was on a motorcycle following a car which eventually turned her left turn signal on, proceeded to turn left (this was on a 2 lane highway). She almost completed the turn when all of a sudden she turned back to the right and made a U-turn, came back accross the highway where I smashed her in the side. She was a black lady with a car full of school kids and got out screaming bloody murder.

There were witnesses to her actions but the courts found ME quilty of failing to yeild right of way. A car proceeding you down the highway has the right of way until fully off the road! Or at least this was the reason the judge used, regardless of her reckless driving.

BTW, the MC got the handle bar hung in the rear window and was dragged until she stopped, I had been thrown onto the rear of the car, a passenger on the MC was caught between the MC and car and was the only real injury.

I've had only 2 minor accidents and I'm almost 31 years old... One was when I was about 19 and borrowing my oldest sister's Ford Escort, which kind of had bald tires and going around a wet corner, kind of lost traction in the rear, I over-corrected and went into an opposite lock spin into a guardrail on a left turn. As I wasn't going to fast to begin with, minor damage, nobody else involved. The next one was a minor fender bender 2 years ago when somebody bumped me in the rear, causing only minor damage that her insurance paid for.... I've never been in an accident where it was my fault and damage to another vehicle... Of course, it doesn't matter living in NJ where your insurance is off-the-wall anyway but still, I'd like to consider myself a pretty good safe driver, when I do drive.
