I am undecided on which one to get. I want an upgrade(I currently have the Marantz SR5000) that will last me for quite some time. Any comments or suggestions as to which I should get?

It depends on how far you want to expand the use.

AVR-7200: Has 7 amplified channels. You can have a 7.1 setup or a 5.1 setup and drive 2 more speakers in another room of your house.

AVR-8000: 5.1 capability. If you want to have 7.1 or multi-room capability, you'll need to get another 2-channel amp.

This is just a few differences between them. I think if we know of your intended use, it will be easier to determine which one to recommend. Also keep in mind that since the 8000 is last year's model, it will be a bit harder to locate. Plus, I've see refurbished AVR-8000 receivers that sell for a few hundred more than a new AVR-7200.

    There are many differences..
AVR 7200 has 7 amplifiers on board
    AVR 7200 has Logic 7 7.1
AVR 7200 has an LCD remote control
AVR 7200 has triple X-Over system
AVR 7200 has DVD audio bass manager
    AVR 7200 has A Bus

    AVR 8000 has THX Ultra
AVR 8000 has dual DSP processors
AVR 8000 can output Logic 7 from DD or DTS 2.0

AVR 8000 was released about 18 months @ $2500, AVR 7200 was released 8 months ago @ $1700. Now the 8000 is discontinued and was closed out @ $1100, now the 7200 is being discounted down to $1000. Also the 7200 has had 2 great revues, June 03 Sound & Vision and September 03 Perfect Vision. Perfect Vision has put it on their recommended list... @$1000 the 7200 is a great buy..
