I read awhile back that nVidia would start to include acceleration for h.264 encoded files (Quicktime HD) with driver release 80 (looks like 81.xx is out). Is this indeed part of the driver now, and will it work with 6600GT cards?

According to this from just a month ago, it's coming in ForceWare 85, and the 6600GT is the minimum -- you lucked out :)

In the meantime, you can wait for the official launch of the CoreAVC codec, by the people who run www.corecodec.org. It is an h.264 encoder/decoder that is extremely efficient - twice as fast as Nero's h.264 codec, for example. Hopefully it will be out in a couple of weeks.
