As flawed as it is, I rather love this pirate adventure, released in 1976. Shaw and Bujold have good chemistry (and the latter has a brief underwater nude shot). The 2.35:1 cinematography is gorgeous, the John Addison score rollicking and memorable, the supporting cast (James Earl Jones, Peter Boyle, Beau Bridges, Angelica Huston, etc.) all fun, some of the sword play quite rousing. I don't care a whit that Maltin's guide gives it a "Bomb" rating. I think it's wonderful, and I highly recommend it. Only about eleven bucks (ten Euros) plus shipping.

Like MGM was/is doing, Universal is parceling out its library to damn near everyone now. Hey, at least we're getting the movies! For the millionth time, anyone who is a serious collector really needs to get into the all-region game.

As a twelve-year-old I saw this in a theater during its original release. Liked it then and I still like it now. But then I'm a big fan of both Shaw and Bujold.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this appear as a future Walmart exclusive.

Universal released this on DVD early on. I'm surprised it has not had a U.S. release on Blu ray yet. Hopefully soon perhaps through Shout Factory if not Universal themselves. I'll hold off on importing it for now.

I, too, have a fondness for this film. Over the years, Universal has not been shy of releasing it. I think they released it in just about every format there was....including Super 8mm! I'm sure they or a sublicense will get around to a region A release eventually..........

I've never seen this, I have a CD of the John Addison soundtrack, I'll think about it. I am going to buy the German release of Grey Lady Down released in late June, & while Germany are releasing seventies Universal movies, I hope they get around to The Great Waldo Pepper.

Yes, WALDO PEPPER would be cool to have. And ICEMAN. And THE HEIRESS. And....

I didn't realize HTF had turned into Mr. Skin. I thought this was a forum for grownups, not teenagers looking for masturbation aids.

Martin. I simply appreciate the female body and that this one belonged to Ms. Bujold made that shot quite lovely for me. A thousand apologies if this offended you.

P.S. I didn't realize HTF had turned into a forum for the use of language such as "masturbation" in a derogatory way.;)

This is not the first time Mr. Teller has expressed disapproval of anyone appreciating the female body.

When "appreciating" looks an awful lot like "objectifying", then yes, I disapprove. Of course, it's usually the movie doing the objectifying, but highlighting that as if it's a selling point only exacerbates the problem.

Whatever. It was surely a selling point for Universal, because for this 26-year-old it got my attention for about 0.5 seconds. I tried finding a response to this last reply from you that wouldn't just lead into a full-blown argument, but have decided not to drag out what shouldn't even be a talking point. Certainly I don't consider myself a pervert. I am now 67, and still enjoy the sight of a young woman's body.

Anyway, let's part company here and move on.

It's a fun movie and is in my Amazon.de queue.

Oh please get over your self. I have read many posts on this forum pointing out the unveiling of the female form in movies. I've written some of those posts. As a resident dirty-old-man on the HTF I hope these posts keep in coming.

Old dudes trying to silence the voices of feminism... what is this, the Republican party? :D

I've said what I needed to say. I will continue to call out things that I find tasteless and/or sexist when I see them, so I guess you will have to "get over yourself" if that bothers you.

This isn't really the place for the topic but I think you can support women and still admire a beautiful woman. Plenty of women do the same to men. It's simple human nature to desire someone. Of course, there's a line where it can become creepy and gross but I don't think anyone hit that mark here.

Also, I think alot of the guys claiming to be feminists have just found a new way to get laid.
