I'll nominate Alan Parker (seen 8: Bugsy Malone, Midnight Express, Fame, Pink Floyd The Wall, Birdy, Angel Heart, Mississippi Burning, The Commitments)

If I'd seen Munchausen or Fisher King, I could nominate Terry Gilliam. Anyone?

Second:
Spielberg (14)

Guess I'll wait for a ruling before 2nding Sturges (6 1/2), Bunuel (5), or Tarkovsky (4)

I also own 3 unwatched Fassbinder's. I'll probably watch the two I need to make 8 over the weekend. Though getting a 2nd and 3rd might be kind of tough.

Lew, I've seen 4 Wong Kar Wai's and only 1 Kiarostami. I'm closer with Takeshi Kitano (6) or John Cassavetes (5).

I suppose I could de-nominate Rohmer, since he has zilch chance of making it in and nominate John Sayles, but I'll wait a bit and see how things shake out.

Great idea for a tournament Jim.

Well some of these I can't second or third, cause I've only seen 7 of their films. :frowning:

But I can third:

Robert Zemekis

and second:

Preston Sturges
Frank Capra
John Huston
Howard Hawks

I'll nominate:

Francis Ford Coppola (I only have to have seen 8, not liked 8 right?)

Charlie Chaplin

Mel Brooks

George Cukor

As a sidenote, I finally broke down and got the Kurosawa box set (Ran/Madadayo/documentary) and it just now arrived. Holy smokes, this sucker is BIG.

Alright lemme straighten this mess out before this gets tied into a knot. I take the blame for not explaining this concept correctly.

Looks like we have plenty of people interested though. :emoji_thumbsup:

here goes: (I'll update the revised rules in my first post shortly)

Theatrical films only - sorry. I know certain directors have made great mini-series, pilots, made-for TV movies, student films, music videos, etc. I want to concentrate only on theatrical releases otherwise this'll get way too muddled.

You have to have seen 8 films to nominate a Director. Which obviously means the Director has to have made at least 8 Theatrical films to get in the Main* Tournament.

You have to have seen at least 3 films of a Director in order to second & third.

After we get our Main pool of Directors (which I haven't set a limit on yet) we'll start nominating the Wild-card Directors.

Wild-card directors will have to have had at least 4 theatrical films & to nominate you have to have seen 4.

Same rule (3 films) with seconds & thirds.

So for right now I'm only accepting nominations for our Main group (Remember - the Director has to have made a minimum of 8 Theatrical films).

I'll be back in a few to update the Nominations list.
