It's not going to happen with movies. Film financing has become extremely complicated - with money coming in piecemeal from all over the world - so it's rare that a single entity holds worldwide distribution rights for any given title.

A standard release date won't affect regional rights. We have the problem in Australia that HD downloads of music from the major players such as Univesal aren't allowed because of regional issues. This won't go away just because some pop titles will be given the same release dates when available in certain areas. The same release date will be used only if the releasing party has the right to make that release.

So there's nothing here to serve as a model for the home video industry.
