Might anyone have any knowledge or informed speculation on "Great Expectations"?

I'm considering the Criterion Collection release (I think RAH has it as one of his recommendations), but wondering if there is reasonable likelihood that the MGM release will 1) exist, and 2) be a new superior transfer?

    Any comments?

    Thank you.

    David,
MGM was going to release Great Expectations in the David Lean Collection which has 7 other Lean films in it, but it was delayed. It's been rumored that they will release it individually too. I haven't heard anything about the transfer being used by MGM, since I already have the Criterion dvd and I'm a very happy with it.

MGM have used transfers from Carlton in the UK before, and I have a sneaking suspicion - nothing more than that - that they will do the same again here for this and other Lean titles.

For the difference between the Carlton and Criterion Great Expectations transfers see here.

I would love to see those David Lean films from MGM get released. I wonder when we can expect them? Granted I haven't seen any of them, but they look like films that I would enjoy.

I've a feeling that the films may not be released. M-G-M seems to own some limited distribution rights, which possbily do not extend to home video.

Almost fifteen years ago DL requested a new print stuck for his personal use from the original negative, which at that time was too shrunken. It would seem that the Criterion DVD is the correct version to add to one's collection, and is of superb quality.

As much as I love Criterion, still having to pay $28 (DVD Pacific / SSRP is $39.95 - the same as their 2-disc SEs!) for this one is a bit of stretch. Great transfer, but no extras. Surely there should be a price reduction? $19.95 would be fair.

You could always buy the Great Adaptations box set from Criterion. Great Expectations, Oliver Twist, Lord of the Flies and The Most Dangerous game for MSRP $99.95, or $64.97 at dvdplanet.com. That averages out to $16.25 a piece.
