I doubt the vast majority of folks will go to the trouble to track these down
You're right Brian, but the option is there...

I won't belabour the point about getting a Region-Free player, but Ted Todorov did with me and he was right, it has paid for itself a dozen times over...

Those Bunuel discs are NTSC and are good... a couple of other guys I know picked them up as well, butI fear they may be unavailable or hard to get now (NTSC versions)... but if you don't pick one up ( seek them out, go to EBay etc. ) then all that means is you don't want them bad enough... for Bunuel fans its worth buying a Region Free just for those 4 films alone... plus Âge d'or is coming soon too...

Since I have a Malata I suppose I could buy the PAL and trade away the NTSC ones... its a thought.

Ken Russell fans - the R2 discs of Elgar and Delius: Song of Summer are essential. For my money, Delius is the greatest thing he ever made (and he agress on the commentary track).

Thank you SO MUCH for that info Gary!

I've placed an order and will take my chances that they are region free (the defective copy of El/Criminal I have has the same cover/label). If they are region 2 it'll just be an excuse to finally get a region-free player I guess... which will be an excuse to buy more dvd's, so here's hoping they are region 0. :)

just adding: the newer issues of El and Criminal I mentioned are sold seperately with different covers on a different label.

Willard,

You may wish to e-mail the owner. His name is Marc... A very nice guy.

[email protected]

I'm sure he can verify... but getting a Region-Free player wouldn't be the worst thing that happens out of this ;)

Cheers,
Gary

Well... this is what I've gathered from various searches and helpful info from Marc at MachiavelDVD with regards to the two Bunuel dvd's:

The initial run of region 0 NTSC discs are indeed out of print and have been for some time. The same double feature discs are now in print from the same label as region 2 PAL discs.

After much consideration I've decided to get that region-free player. I browsed to see what other non-1 discs are desireable enough to justify the purchase and it was the prospect of Greenaway's The Falls that finally pushed me over the edge.

added:
ugh... scratch that. I see I've got much more research to do before diving into a region-free player. I won't clutter this thread with info that's discussed elsewhere. If you are serious about selling your NTSC copies, Gary, please let me know. I'd trade also, though I doubt I have anything you'd need.

Allow me to be the lone voice for Jerry Lewis' movies on DVD. Only The Nutty Professor has been released, which leaves at least a dozen more that he directed. Paramount gauged interest in releasing more at some point, so I hope the studio follows through by actually producing them.

There's not a director today who doesn't use one of Lewis' innovations: the video assist, an on-camera/on-set video-playback monitor to see instantly how a shot came out.

I think Vincente Minnelli is quite underrepresented on DVD. I'm not completely sure, but I can only count 5 of his movies on DVD. Many of them (like Lust for Life) need to be restored, badly.

1. Matter of Time, A (1976)
... aka Nina (1976) (Italy)
2.On a Clear Day You Can See Forever (1970)
3.Sandpiper, The (1965)
4.Goodbye Charlie (1964)
5.Courtship of Eddie's Father, The (1963)
6.Two Weeks in Another Town (1962)
7.Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse (1962)
8.Bells Are Ringing (1960)
9.Home from the Hill (1960)
10.Reluctant Debutante, The (1958)
11.Some Came Running (1958)
12.Gigi (1958) DVD (poor transfer)
13.Seventh Sin, The (1957) (uncredited)
14.Designing Woman (1957) DVD
15.Tea and Sympathy (1956)
16.Lust for Life (1956)
17.Kismet (1955)
18.Cobweb, The (1955)
19.Long, Long Trailer, The (1954)
20.Brigadoon (1954) DVD, need both versions
21.Band Wagon, The (1953)
22.Story of Three Loves, The (1953) (segment "Mademoiselle")
... aka Equilibrium (1953)
... aka Three Stories of Love (1953)
23.Bad and the Beautiful, The (1952) DVD
24.Lovely to Look at (1952) (uncredited) (uncredited)
25.American in Paris, An (1951) DVD, need new transfer
26.Father's Little Dividend (1951)
27.Father of the Bride (1950)
28.Madame Bovary (1949)
29.Pirate, The (1948)
30.Till the Clouds Roll by (1946) (uncredited)
31.Undercurrent (1946)
32.Ziegfeld Follies (1946)
33.Yolanda and the Thief (1945)
34.Clock, The (1945)
... aka Under the Clock (1945) (UK)
35.Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)
36.I Dood It (1943)
... aka By Hook or by Crook (1943) (UK)
37.Cabin in the Sky (1943)
38.Panama Hattie (1942) (uncredited)

Lack of Vincente Minnelli's movies on DVDs leads me to Judy Garland, perhaps the greatest musical star of the 20th century, who is hardly represented on DVD at all. I believe she can only be seen in:

The Wizard of Oz
The Harvey Girls
A Star Is Born

plus some disks of her television show from the early 60s.

I know Judy isn't a director, but I thought I add her list here.

(sigh)... last word on this I promise. I feel obligated to update about the Bunuel discs.

MachiavelDVD tested these discs on a standard player and they ARE region free NTSC. This despite the fact that the manufacturer's site lists one of them as PAL-2 and there are copies of both being sold on eBay specified as PAL or NTSC (the latter costing considerably more). I checked the copy I have and there is no indication whatsoever. Thoroughly confusing, no?

So... the score (at MachiavelDVD at least) is Olvidados and El/Criminal NTSC region free. Mind, Viridiana on the same label is confirmed PAL-2 with no english subtitles.

I hope this update is useful.

We don't have most of the films of Juzo Itami on DVD.
The only ones out are

The Funeral (Ososhiki) - 1985
Tampopo - 1985
A Taxing Woman (Marusa no Onna) - 1987

And all but Tampopo are Pan & Scan

We need all 3 of those re-done properly, and all his remaining films out!

A Taxing Woman's Return (Marusa no Onna II) - 1988
A-ge-man - 1990
Minbo no Onna - 1992
Daibyonin - 1993
Shizukana seikatsu -1995
Supah no Onna - 1996
Marutai no Onna - 1997

Thanks for your legwork, WillardK--I ordered Los Olivados from MachiavelDVD last night (I would've ordered the El/Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz DVD, too, but it was out of stock). The way I figure, it could be years before we see many of the Bunuel masterworks on DVD, so I'll take what I can get . . . (and thanks to Gary Tooze for the original info).

I seem to recall the dicussion in my ListServ about another Spanish DVD E-tailer selling these NTSC ones ( no longer at DVDGO.com)... but I can't reacll the name of the site. I think Donald Brown knows...
It was a French site that was advertising these as still available as of several months ago, but I can't recall which one. It wasn't any of the biggies like Cinestore or Amazon.fr. I'll post back if I can find it again.

Cool, another Ken Russell fan (I thought we all died or something)!

Yes, as mentioned, Altered States has been available in Ri for awhile now and it looks and sounds pretty good. Tommy on SuperBit looks great too. However, Women in Love shows it's age and isn't animorphic and Malher really looks and sounds bad - such a pity for such a wild and wonderful film...

Since no one has mentioned him yet, there are quite a few Altman films not on DVD yet in Region 1. Some of the titles not available are:

Kansas City
Short Cuts
Vincent & Theo
Streamers
Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
Perfect Couple, A
Wedding, A
3 Women
California Split
Thieves Like Us
Images
Brewster McCloud
That Cold Day in the Park
Countdown

I own the Region 2 DVDs of Vincent & Theo and Short Cuts. I would love to see the original 4 hour version of Vincent & Theo however.

:frowning:  Sad, but true. One would think at the very least Mr. Lewis's classic auteur films from the early 60s Paramount era would see upcoming Special Edition (with all the bell & whistle special features & extras)DVD release soon:

THE BELLBOY (1960)
THE LADIES' MAN (1961)
THE ERRAND BOY (1962)
THE NUTTY PROFESSOR : SE (1963)
THE PATSY (1964)
THE FAMILY JEWELS (1965).

Next up should be some Frank Tashlin directorial efforts. Among the Tashlin-Lewis collaborations should be released:

ROCK-A-BYE BABY (1958)
THE GEISHA BOY (1958)
CINDERFELLA (1960)
IT'S ONLY MONEY (1962)
WHO'S MINDING THE STORE? (1963)
THE DISORDERLY ORDERLY (1964)

And the Tashlin-directed Martin & Lewis classics:

ARTISTS & MODELS (1955)
HOLLYWOOD OR BUST (1956)

And definitely one other directed by Norman Taurog:

LIVING IT UP (1954)

Of course, I would love to see EVERY & ALL the M & L and JL-solo movies released to DVD like most fans. But at the very least, the above titles are essential.
