I posted this in the PDR area, but thought more people here would be interested.
Circuit City is blowing out their stock of Philips 30-hour DirecTivo units (DSR6000) for $99.96 each. These units also feature the digital out you need to get DD 5.1 from DirecTV. Nice.
If only I'd found out about this deal a few days ago. Pilips' $100 rebate ended on Sunday. D'oh! Coulda been free!

That is great. Does DirectTV have any kind of free installation right now? Maybe I will switch from Dish Network.

Does anyone know if I can yank out my old RCA receiver and put this Phillips DirecTivo receiver in it's place? I'm assuming I can use a different brand receiver with my standard RCA 18" dual LNB dish.

Absolutely. You just need to explain what you're doing when you call in to activate the new receiver and the TiVo service. They should just deactivate the old and and activate the new one.

Joel,
Thanks for posting this -- I have been looking for a deal like this for current subscribers. I picked one of these up last night. If anyone from the L.A. area is considering this, the La Cienga Circuit City story seems to have plenty of them in stock. (Do call ahead to make sure.)
I am an existing DTV subscriber so I had to buy the installation, making mine more than $99, but it is still a steal in my opinion. I had also to get the package that includes a dish (which cost a whole $.01 more), because my existing dish is not a dual LBN dish and I think I need this in order to use the new record-two-different-stations-at-once feature. (If I am wrong about this and only need a single line, please someone let me know and I will cancel the installation!)
I also bought the extended warranty and picked up a wireless jack for the system and got them to price match a $55 internet price I had found on the same unit. Usually they don't price match with the internet -- or so they said -- but agreed to give me their unit for the same price. I have to say, the whole thing was a flawless and very pleasant transaction and having read so much negative feedback on CC I was pleasantly surprised.

Deborah,
you do need two runs from a multiswitch coming off your new Dual lnb to get the two channels at once feature.

Thanks, Robert. I was pretty sure this was so and decided to just go for it despite the extra $$ for installation, which where I live is much too complicated for me to do myself. It took the last installer four and a half hours to get the dish up!I
This is not a time of year when I usually make big purchases for myself, but I rationalized this all by telling myself that it is not going to get any cheaper than this and that I am doing my bit to show I am a confident consumer despite our troubled times.

(Truth be told, I did this because I really need more better ways to distract my presently very nervous self with mindless fare from the tube.)

This sounds like a hecka good deal, but two things are scaring me off a bit.
One being the $249 subscription fee..

The second (correct me if I'm wrong) but you can't record local channels ONLY Directv channels ( we don't have locals on DTV yet) This would kinda suck because there isn't a lot I want to record on DTV (maybe a PPV DD movie once in a while etc.)
Oh well, they still have them in stock here, so I'll think on it...

Evan,
Everything electronic/techy seems to be in higher demand in Northern California than it is here in Los Angeles. And you guys seem to get much better media services than we do, too. My daughter and son-in-law live in the Oakland area and have the same cable provider (AT&T) that we have where I live and their service and quality is light years away from ours! I was always puzzled by this. But the Los Angeles Times recently ran an article that explained some of this: Despite the fact that the entertainment industry is located here, L.A. has a population with a much lower per capita income than most places in Northern Cal. Cable is lousey here because the demand for cable service is relatively low. Much of this city's population is just too poor to afford it.
So I think that the Circuit Cities in this area probably move all their stock at a much slower rate than the ones in Northern California. For once this low-tech city worked to my advantage, I guess, because my local Circuit City had lots and lots of the 6000Rs. :)

Alf,
They do offer a $9.95 month-to-month subscription price, as well.
However, no, you can't record anything but what you receive via DirecTV. There's no TV tuner in the box, the TiVo just records the MPEG stream from the satellite receiver, so if you don't get locals via the dish, you're out of luck.
