This is just plain impressive. The scale of the city is incredible, and I'm only in the first section. I still get lost all the time when looking for key locations like spray shops or the hospital. I know I'll get it eventually.
The driving is also spot on and the damaged vehicles can be a bear to maneuver (especially when being rammed by the police :D ).
I did a couple of ambulance missions before I ran over too many people trying to save the guy with the bleeding foot and the cops set off after me.
I recommend this to anyone with a sense of lawlessness. This one isn't any kind of undercover cop approach like Driver. You're a full on criminal. After helping a guy knock off his wife, I drove the car to the docks and pushed it over to hide the evidence. I can honestly say I've never seen a game so open ended. This is great, and a recommended purchase.

Well, not since the first one, eh?

But, for some reason, the coversion to 3D makes it feel all the more immersive. Walking through a gang neighborhood where a drive by just happens to be going on while you are walking through just makes the city feel alive. And seeing objects in the distance that you just choose to drive to has no real equal in my eyes. The original was great for the non-linear feel and excellent gameplay. This is similar except that it seems so much more alive.

Indeed. I'm biased. I worked on the first two, but fled the country during the (later to be aborted) GTA2.5 project. I'm glad GTA3's turned out well & should be a big success for the guys, but I get a little frustrated at people going "ooooh" at features that have been in there since the first game. That make sense?
Perfect example: I just read a forum posting (elsewhere) from someone saying it's great to finally be able to *pause* the game... Pause!
I think a lot of people in the US glossed over the original games because of the perspective & lack of decent market branding (especially the first game). They're only now getting into it & don't know what they missed.
Ho hum. Maybe I'm just too old & cynical. This industry does it to you.

. I've played the first 2 GTA's (good fun, and good work Brian!) and part 3 makes the jump to the next-gen PS2 perfectly. As has been said, the city feels HUGE. I just played the first 2 missions, but then decided to just wander around, baseball bat in hand, and mug people. I stole a cop car, then beat up a cop and stole his gun, but a bunch of cops found me a shot me down.
I may be a mild-mannered and polite person, but GTA3 brings out the criminal in all of us. This game shouldn't take more than a few weeks to shoot to the top of the list of games Joe Lieberman would like to ban.

I see where you're coming from. But you can understand the joy we see in a free flowing driving sim environment with the freedom we had in GTA series.
Let me also take the time to thank you for your work on the originals. I thought they were enormous successes stateside and with quite good reason. I was rather hoping they would repush the original releases ala the Blizzard approach when this gets a PC release.

I've got a question for those who have this - what is the time like between saves? Without wishing to knock Brian and co. for the first two (and I know they did do a lot to help it on GTA2) but after loving the first few levels of the original GTA (and on the London expansion) the fact that I had to try and do the next level in one attempt over the course of several hours meant that I basically left it there. It wasn't the fact that I couldn't cheat my way through saving every 30 seconds like you can in most PC games, just that finding that amount of time in one go was a problem.

Iain,
You can save anytime, but you have to go to your hideout to do it. You just can't hit pause and then save. And when you save, 6 hours of time elapses.
One neat thing I did last night while I was showing the game to my wife. I picked up a hooker, took her to an alley, and did my thing with her. When she got out of the car, so did I. I then beat her down with a baseball bat and took my money back. My wife and I both got a giggle out of that. :)
So far my favorite mission was stealing a car from some guy who owed Joey Pants money, taking it to the shop to have a bomb put in it, took it back to the restaurant where the guy was eating, and then watching him blow up in it. However, there just happened to be a cop parked at the light when I got out of the car, so after the cut scene he attacked me because he saw what I did. I beat him down, took his shotgun, and ran like hell. I took four cops out before being taken down myself. :)
The one thing I like more about this version is the view. The game feels more immersive now, since you are right in the action. The gameplay is just as fun as the original, but the 3D view makes the game feel more "personal".
BTW Brian, good job on the originals. I had a lot of fun playing the 1st GTA. :)

I truly cannot believe that this game is so open ended! Ive never played any of the other GTA games but it just seems preposterous that you can "get a hooker and then beat the hell out of her with a bat to get your money back". I laughed out loud at that one - as sick and twisted as it is. I can't wait to get this game - it's not coming until the end of November though! I can only imagine the other stuff that you're capable of doing. Anyone else have some sick/funny stories?

Rob,
Unless someone moved Canton MI out of the States, GTA3 is out now... :)

Actually, I used the Amazon.com special to order this game and one of the other games I ordered hasn't been released yet. To save on shipping, I have all three coming at the same time - thus the late November arrival. Besides, I've been busy on DMC and I hate to leave a game unfinished - which it sounds like I might once I get GTA3.

Peter,
Don't worry, it isn't going to end in a couple of hours. According to IGN, if you rush through the game, it will take 20-30 hours. If you do every single mission, it could take 50+ hours.

It's just the little things you gotta love in this game.
Was cruisin' the Red Light Dist, some dick almost stepped out in front of me, he yelled out "punk ass bitch"! So, I slammed on the brakes, got outta the car and beat his brains in with my bat. Grabbed all his cash and took off.
Trying the insane stunts is a blast in and of itself. Found a little jump ramp, hit it hard and landed up on the elevated train tracks. Drove around town like that till a train wiped my ass out.

Well I was cruising around in a van, stop to pick up a hooker and two came up to the van. One jumped in the front seat the other got in the back! I don't even think I was charged extra!
Has anyone stole the car from the dealership yet? It rocks.
It's by 8-ball's place, you need to drive a car through the window of the dealer to get it out. It's like a cross between a viper and a cobra. It's fast and it sounds awesome.
