A friend of mine is new to foreign movies and would like some suggestions. I had a few basic titles but I'd really like to hear what you would recommend to the newcomer. (I tried the search function but it is down right now.) Thanks!

Do all Americans view Canadian films as foreign? I'm sure they do SEEM foreign compared to the crap released in Hollywood on a daily basis :)
JonZ's list has some great titles. If you like unusual films check out Jean Luc Godard's Alphaville (though you may get hooked and buy all his movies) Also check out the eerily beautiful Aguirre: The Wrath of God.
If you're already checking out Kurosawa movies (Ran, Seven Samurai) don't miss Ikiru there are no fight scenes or Samurai but it still manages to kick ass in it's own way.
BTW if you like Atom Egoyan's Exotica don't miss Calender or The Sweet Hereafter.

I'd say four really important films that would give you a really good grounding to branch out from are
The Grand Illusion
The 400 Blows
Seven Samurai
Grave of the Fireflies

I'll second CINEMA PARADISO as an outstanding film. Another good coming of age film is BUTTERFLY (Spanish) set during the Spanish Civil War.
JEAN DE FLORETTE and the sequel MANON OF THE SPRING are two very fine French films.
If we're talking foreign films and not just foreign language films I'll also recommend GALLIPOLI, a great Australian film set in WWI and THE LONG GOOD FRIDAY, one from Britain dealing with the British mob.

Don't forget about the Italian classic Suspiria. One of the all-time great horror films.
