Just caught this great movie last night, and I'd say it's second only to the original Godfather in terms of mob flicks that I've seen. So when is Warner going to come out with the rumored Goodfellas SE?

In Warner's last chat they said they were waiting for Martin Scorsese to become available to 'bless their efforts' before they released it - i.e, they were waiting for his schedule on GANGS OF NEW YORK to finish for him to record a commentary. Scorsese has recorded commentary tracks for the upcoming LAST WALTZ and KING OF COMEDY discs from MGM and Fox, so you'd hope that he would have been able to do one for GOODFELLAS by now as well.

Personally, I think Universal should grab him for a CASINO commentary while they have the chance.

Well, it's been "coming soon" since 99. Now, finally there is some indication that it might be coming out this year after all. Irwin Winkler (the producer) mentioned in a recent interview with DVD Empire that he just recorded a commentary track for a special edition of Goodfellas. In his own words, the new DVD will be coming out "soon enough". Hopefully the disc will also have a Scorsese commentary.

Is it safe to buy Goodfellas, Casino, and Raging Bull, or will we see special editions soon?

Casino is the only one I haven't anything about. I would defintely hold off on Goodfellas and Raging Bull. Casino defintely has the best transfer of the two, but too many artifacts.

Count me in for the Goodfellas SE when it comes out! I've been waiting for this for a long time and wouldn't touch the current flipper with a ten foot pole. Speaking of Scorsese and commentaries, it's unfortunate that the track he recorded for Taxi Driver is on the Criterion lasrdisc only, as is the one on Raging Bull.

Did Winkler mention the Special Edition of Raging Bull?

Winkler produced two other Scorsese movies - Raging Bull and New York, New York and there was no mention of either of these.

-GarethFlynn- Hi guys, thanks for coming. My question is in regards to Martin Scorsese's
classic "Raging Bull", which you released as a bare-bones non-anamorphic disc in the early
days of the format. Have you any plans to revisit this title as a Special Edition with an anamorphic
transfer and perhaps a commentary? If not, would you consider licensing this title (or any others)
to Criterion (a long shot, I know!). Many thanks!

Hmm...that doesn't make me feel good. This is from the MGM chat last year, here's the quote:

It just means that Winkler did not record a commentary for the upcoming Raging Bull:SE. Who cares about a producer's commentary anyway ? I would be very interested in a Scorsese commentary (I wish they could license the existing one from Criterion). I also wish they would re-release Taxi Driver with the Criterion commentary.
