My mom wants to buy my dad a turntable so he can play his old jazz 78s (probably in addition to some 45s and 33s that he has in his collection). I don't know what her price range is but it is probably $300 or under (though she might go higher if it will give my dad dramatically better sound).

I can't find any thread dealing with turntables that will play 78s. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have you tried resale shops or Ebay? That may be the most cost effective option otherwise try here http://www.needledoctor.com/s.nl/sc.2/category.42/.f
They have a selection of turntables that will play 78's
I've bought a couple of things from them and found them to be pretty friendly and helpful.

This is what you're looking for.

    three speed turntable

Well under your top budget and will get the job done. Will get one myself soon as my parents have a large 78 collection that I'd like to archive (they are fragile, brittle discs).
