I currently have the Sony WM40 sub and I'm looking to upgrade. I have $300-$400 to spend. I'm looking for a better sounding sub that is a step up from the Sony. I will be matching this with my Paradigm Atoms and the Paradigm CC-170 center. It will be used for 80-90% movies. Any suggestions? I was thinking about doing a DIY sub, if it could be done in this price range.

For $300-$400, I'd check out the Velodyne CHT-10 or better yet find an open box CHT-12 at Circuit City. They're great budget home theater subs.

The Infinity IL120S can be had on ebay for $300....refurb but full manufacturer warranty and a very nice sub. Normally retailed for close to a grand.

I really believe that you will get a much better product from HSU, Adire Audio or SVS than any store bought sub, especially in this price range.

I would check out the Infinity Entra 2 Sub. 12" 250W. It's on sale at Crutchfield for $350. I have the Entra 1, a 10", and I am very satisfied. Wish the 12" would have been on sale at the time.

The Sony WX700 w/ dual 10" drivers in a push/pull arrangement and a 250W amp looks intruiging, but I personaly would either go w/ the Adire Rave or DIY (Shiva, Tempest, AV12, AV15, etc).

Hope this helps :)

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Any thoughts on the Paradigm PDR10? Would that be a step up from the Sony WM40? Thanks.
