We can't leave out LOGAN'S RUN. The Warner and/or MGM

DVD offers a great 16x9 transfer of this Todd-AO cult

classic & 5.1 DD 5.1 audio which preserves the original

directional dialog discrete mix.

If you like 50's sci-fi, When Worlds Collides. The current Aliens dvd is pretty good, I would pick that one up. I don't think Aliens will be getting a Five-Star any time soon, although I'd love one! Hopefully the upcoming Blade Runner will have the current version on it, but it may not, so if you like the Director's cut, you may want to pick that up. And, if you can find it, Disney's The Black Hole is a corny but fun sci-fi film. If you get Brazil, be sure to pick up the Criterion edition. WELL worth it!

-Frank Herbert's Dune: TV Mini-Series (may want to wait for anamorphic re-release)
I have the original Time Machine (and highly recommend it) and am also looking forward to the A.I. disc.

How is Solaris? (The film and the disc) I haven't seen it yet and I thought about picking it up but I heard rumors that Criterion has gotten a hold of it.

Darn it! Peter Apruzzese beat me to it with recommendations for The Day the Earth Caught Fire and the Quatermass flicks. Well, I'll also recommend them and offer up a couple of my own: Fiend Without a Face and Donovan's Brain, both are neat little sf/horror gems, and are worth picking up.

V: Original Miniseries

It still holds up well, great 1:85 transfer, and very interesting commentary. The director even tells us his e-mail address and offers to answer any other questions we might have.

If you can find them, FAHRENHEIT 451 and SLAUGHTERHOUSE FIVE.

In addition to those mentioned above, LOGAN'S RUN, BARBARELLA and ZARDOZ.

These are some excellent suggestions. Many of my favorites have already been mentioned, but one notable absence is H.G. Wells' Things to come. Image has produced a fine DVD, which presents the film in the highest quality I have ever seen. It’s a "must have" for any science fiction fan.

If you are a SF fan you really should consider these:

- The Last Starfighter

- Galaxy Quest

- Stargate (I'm perfectly happy with the current disc from Artisan)

- Spaceballs

- Mars Attacks!

- Alien Nation

- The Black Hole

- Outland

- Mission to Mars

I also second:

- Aliens

- All the Star Trek films (maybe you should wait for the rumored SE's).

- Starship Troopers (SE has been released in R2)

- 12 Monkeys

- Totall Recall

- Men In Black

- Ghostbusters I and II

- Brazil (Criterion)

I would warn that Outland has a horrible port of the laserdisc on it, and is not anamorphic like the cover states. Another poor transfer is Rhino's Galaxina.

One vote for Event Horizon, a movie with a fascinating premise ("what would it be like literally to go to hell and back?") that didn't quite pull off the sci-fi - horror mesh. You look at it and ask yourself, "What if they'd gone all the way with their premise? Were they saving the rest for a sequel?" Still worth owning, in my opinion. (Excellent visuals, spooky atmosphere.) Hope they do a special edition of this one some time. (But I think it's highly unlikely for a one-shot "underperforming" film like this one.)
Have to disagree with previous posters on two films:
(1) By all means A.I., even though some of us don't like the ending, is worth any science-fiction fan's having for its stunning visuals alone. It's an intelligent, if flawed, film. (I attribute the intelligence of the film to Kubrick. The visual-sparkle kudos go to Spielberg.)
(2) James Cameron's longer cut of Aliens is much more complete story-wise than the release version. The motivations of some of the characters, esp. the Ripley character, are rendered much clearer by the inclusion of deleted scenes. I urge you to get it.
