    I'm looking to add to my SF movie collection, and I need some recommendations. I am planning on purchasing A.I. and The Time Machine (1960) next month. Here is what I have so far:
    -The Abyss: Special Edition
    -Alien: 20th Anniversary Edition
    -Close Encounters of the Third Kind: Collector's Edition
    -Contact
    -Jurassic Park: Collector's Edition (widescreen, 5.1)
    -The Matrix (and "Matrix Revisited")
    -Star Trek: The Motion Picture - Director's Edition
    -Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace
    -Superman: The Movie
    -The Terminator: Special Edition
    -T2: Judgment Day: Ultimate Edition
    -Tron: 20th Anniversary Collector's Edition
    Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

    You absolutely must get the remastered version of 2001: A Space Odyssey.

    Here are a few to consider:

    12 Monkeys

    AlienS

    Dark City

    Frequency

    The Iron Giant

    Men in Black DTS

    Planet of the Apes (1968 release) (non-anamorphic)

    Predator DTS

    Superman

    Starman

    The Thing (non-anamorphic)

    X-Men

    Some might argue whether or not several of these titles are actually science fiction, but I've included them anyway. All of the above are great movies and most are great discs as well.

    I'd like to second (third?) the Dark City DVD. Not only is it a fantastic and underrated sci-fi movie, but the DVD is simply great. Roger Ebert recorded one of the finest commentaries I've ever heard for this DVD!

    If you're into animation, the subgenre known as Japanimation (or just Anime) offer some very clever and well crafted science fiction films.
    The best are (IMO): Ghost in the Shell and Akira.
    Good series are Macross Plus and Armitage III.
    I got into Anime because of GitS, sure I'm not the only one. [IMG]

    I'll wholeheartedly second "The Thing". Lovely movie.

    Also, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

    Shame on all for not mentioning Forbidden Planet! It's a great film and a classic.

    In addition to the most essential title, 2001: A Space Odyssey, please consider the following films presently on DVD:

    * Forbidden Planet

    * Blade Runner

    * Zardoz

    * The Time Machine

    * Dark City

    * Gattaca

    Coming soon: The Day the Earth Stood Still.

    I have always been a fan of The Arrival, but the DVD comes with The Arrival 2, which is pure shit.
    Predator DTS is good except that there are rumors of a special edition coming soon.
    You may also like Total Recall.

    I am planning on getting DARK CITY (already rented), 2001 (borrowed), AKIRA, ENEMY MINE, 12 MONKEYS and LOGAN'S RUN.

    I'm waiting for special editions - or anamorphic transfers - of BLADE RUNNER (borrowed), FORBIDDEN PLANET, ALIENS (possible 5-Star?), WESTWORLD, THE PLANET OF THE APES (1968), SILENT RUNNING, METROPOLIS, INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS (1956), ROBOCOP, STARMAN, STARSHIP TROOPERS, X-MEN (borrowed) and the rest of the STAR TREK movies, among others.

    I don't care too much for GHOST IN THE SHELL, INDEPENDENCE DAY (borrowed), MEN IN BLACK (borrowed), PREDATOR, THE THING (1982, rented) and TOTAL RECALL, and I'm not too sure about FREQUENCY. I am looking forward to the eventual release of THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL though (and DUNE: TV DC, SOYLENT GREEN, etc.).

    Never seen ZARDOZ.

    Maybe I'm too picky about my DVDs. :b

    I'll add "Six String Samurai" to the list of recommended Sci-Fi films on DVD.

    Another vote for Dark City, great film, great DVD. Criterion's fantastic Brazil is worth a look if you're willing to spend the money.
    But if you're looking for great sci-fi titles then I would suggest skipping A.I. [IMG]
    I would also skip the Aliens Director's Cut. The stuff Cameron put back in is just awful and I regret buying it to this day.

    If you want to try a Sci Fi release a little off the beaten path you might want to check out "Fantastic Planet". This Czech Animated film is not for everyone but is definitely a unique Sci Fi experience.

    Also, "Fahrenheit 451" is worth a look as a classic Sci Fi entry.

    Shame on me for not mentioning Zardoz in my last post! Tim, you need to see it. Zardoz is one of the better Science-Fiction films out there and would complement your collection nicely.

    The Hidden is a great little Sci-Fi movie.
