Hi all!

I just came back from Europe with a bunch of R2 dvds, and found out that my current dvd player, a Panasonic RP56, is dead (the dreaded H0 error).

I had the intention of buying a cheap player that converts pal to ntsc, but wonder now if I shouldn't invest in a better player that could be my default player, and do the convertion. I have a 16:9 set (old Toshiba 40H80) so progressive scan and image quality is pretty important to me.

So my question is, does such a player exists? Or shoud I invest in a good ntsc prog scan player and a cheaper player for my R2 discs?

I saw a Malata DVP-2818B that is progressive scan and convert pal to ntsc (I *assume* it can be made region-free). Its cheap retail price worries me, is it any good?

Thanks!
Simon

I have a Malata 991 that I got about 4 years ago. I use it about a half dozen times a year. People who used my model hard have generally had them break down. I'd buy some sort of budjet multi-system player and use it only for the out-of-region discs, like I have. Good luck on your quest!

The Cambridge Audio 540D is region-free right out of the box, does a flawless PALNTSC conversion automatically (once you set it up in the menu), has superb CD playback, lightning fast layer change, won't break down after 5 discs and is 389$ US retail). It retails for 489$ Cdn.
