Gods and Generals will open in limited release in December, with an expanded release in late January, 2003. Also of note, there will be two "Special Previews" for Gods and Generals. This twenty-minute preview will first be shown at the Antietam reenactment, at Antietam National Battlefield Park, Sharpsburg, Maryland, in September, and then at the Corps of Cadets at West Point Military Academy, New York, in mid-November.

I'm not aware of any outrage either. The book and subject matter that the movie was based on were both treated with great respect in the movie. The only outrage may be not using the extended cut as Paul stated or are we not understanding your question?

I'm of two minds about this. Both of Jeff Shaara's books, Gods and Generals and The Last Full Measure were examples of some fairly mediocre writing, and both of them covered WAAAAAAAY too much time and space for a single novel. I can't imagine that the movies are going to be any kind of improvement. I'm still guaranteed to go see them, though.

Oscar, thanks for the update. I'm very much looking forward to Gods and Generals.

As for the supposed outrage over the Gettysburg DVD, I can't remember any. I WAS a bit disappointed that the extended version wasn't used, but I wasn't overly upset about it.

I have to agree with Andrew that Jeff Shaara's sequels don't compare to Michael Shaara's The Killer Angels, but hopefully this inequality won't be transferred to the film version of Gods and Generals.

I'm looking forward to this and the sequel when it comes out. While I agree that the prequel and sequel aren't as good as The Killer Angels I still thought they were pretty good. It would also be intersting to see Gone for Soldiers made into a movie (Jeff Shaara's Mexican War novel). We're also going to be getting Cold Mountain in the not to distant future.

perhaps I got it wrong, simply due to the fact that they released the theatrical version and people wanted the extended version. So I stand corrected and simply misread what was wrong.
Thanks for the update. Are the books very different from the movies ?
    Thanks

There was an extended cut of this fine film (Gettysburg)? I have both the VHS widescreen and DVD, and they are both the same version of the film. What format was the extended version of the film?

P.S. How much longer was the extended version? [IMG]

Looks good. I'm glad they brought back Jeff Daniels to play Chamberlain.
