I have to make a comment about the shaving thing. A properly maintained goatee is actually MORE work than if I was clean shaved...Triming it, keeping the edges clean, making sure that both sides are equal in length, etc.

I hardly consider a goatee to be a 'lazy' thing to have.

Timely thread. After having one for the past 3 years I shaved it off this week. It was just time for a change.

I've got the soul patch going. I grew it cause I was making a movie, and I thought I should look all "filmmakery". It makes my face look more interesting, so I've kept it for the past year, and I'll keep it for a while longer. I've noticed a lot more guys have started growing them recently, probably trying to get away from the abundance of goatees. I don't really care either way, it's my face, I can do with it what I want.

The facial hair trend I don't like is the chin strap beard, where it's just a thin strap of hair following the jaw-line. Makes everyone who has one look like they want to be in the Backstreet Boys.

Amen. I know a guy (without a discernable jawline.. or chin for that matter) who does that 'chinstrap' thing and quite frankly it's disgusting.

Over the years I've oscillated between clean shaven (see my picture on the HTF photos page for an example) and 'mountain man' (living in Maine did that to me). I recently had a 'van dyke' but i work in a law office so i keep it clean shaven. i've been doing the 'soul patch' thing since about '95.

i also went goth for many years (long black hair) and i kept clean shaven during most of that time. i had dreadlocks for a while (a real faux pax for us scottish fellas but hey, i was young) but a lot of goth's do this really dramatic sideburn, where it's basically two long, six inch spikes of black hair masquerading as sideburns.

goatees, right now, in our society, seem to represent something rugged, experienced, or mature.. even masculine.
but it's true, most women i've dated hate facial hair, with some notable exceptions (some made me grow it).

So what do you guys think of the moustache, not coupled with a beard but alone? Not a lot of people seem to have that anymore. Tom Selleck and Alan Jackson are the only ones I can think of off hand. :)

I have a moustache and I've had it since just after high school. Of course, no one noticed until I was out of college. :D I shaved it in '97. Everyone hated that so I grew it back.

moustache - you either look good with a solo moustache or you look bad.

Reminds me of that Friends episode where Chandler decides to grow a moustache bucause Richard (Tom Selleck) has one. But it looks like crap on him.

Unfortunately i dont have a pic, nor do i have a real gotee, but i do have somewhat of a soulpatch thing.

Its wider than a soul patch tho and i have a crazy long, old, chinees wiseman type beard (think satan) :)

I like it cuz its different and i like confusing people on the real me :)

My wife says i look like some crazy man, but i consider myself halfway intelligent and im a heck of a nice guy.

Plus im bald :) :)

PS-I really blend in well in a biker bar or heavy metal concert :) So i look sorta outta place at church :)

I had a goatee and sideburns from '95 to '99. In late '99 I got rid of the goatee because too many white-trashy/Jerry Springer types were wearing one.

But I'm keeping my sideburns (they're about 3" long). I'm thinking about buying an electric trimmer so I can "draw" a short horizontal section on the bottom, i.e. my sideburns would have a subtle "L" shape. But if it's too much of a hassle (I have to shave every three days) the straight ones are coming back!

I usually go for a beard in the winter months as well -less work and more warmth :). I've never really had a thing for the goatee - I definitely wouldn't compare it to having a mullet.

Maybe in the summer i'll go for Mutton Chops. Let's bring them back. ;)

I don't know why they're called van dykes
I don't suppose it's after Dick Van Dyke, so probably it is named after the famous Flemish painter Anton Van Dijck (1599-1641), who became better known as Anthony Van Dijck after he was invited to the English court by King Charles I.

He painted lots of portraits of men, women and children, royal, noble and/or wealthy, and is sometimes referred to as the Andy Warhol of the 17th century (that must be a joke: it would rather make Andy Warhol the Anthony... well you'd guess it).

Many of the mature male persons on his paintings looked like this:

I don't mind the goatee look, and I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as a mullet.

I find the chinstrap and lower-lip look to be weird.

Solo moustache is definitely out of the question. Everytime I see someone with just a moustache, I think of cheesy 70's porn movies.

Now, do the same "rules of grooming" apply to the black community? Where moustaches are generally a fashion-crime, I see many black men wearing them. I personally don't like the look of them on anyone, but it seems to be fashionally acceptable among black men. Why is that?

There's one other prominent solo moustache "personality" - Ned Flanders. Personally, I think the fact that ol' Neddie sports a 'stache is the primary reason for their fall from facial-hair fashion grace. ;)

I was wanting to say, it seems like alot of the true playas out there grew moustaches because the ladies loved the moustache rides.

I've had my left ear pierced since 5th grade, that was over 6 years ago (man, it was ONLY 6 years ago). I have a hoop earing more or less because it's easy to have, moreso than a stud earning.

Jeff Kleist-

You'd be surprised at how well my facial hair grows in for only being 17. My moustee (moustache/goatee) is pretty thick.

I grew mine in response to a colleague coming back from holiday with one, and the comment that the boss didn't like it, so I joined him in pissing off the boss :D

Having said that, I've always hated shaving, since my hair is quite thick and coarse and I get nasty razor burn. With a goatee/mustache, I can get away with shaving the rest every other day, and of course the goatee/mustache doesn't get shaved at all although a trim with scissors every few days is required.

But perhaps the most important reason: being Chinese and since most Chinese men don't have much facial hair, I grow a goatee/mustache because I can :D

No kind of facial hair agrees with me. NONE. Ever since it started growing in, I've tried several styles, all with disastrous results:

-Solo 'stache: My mom saw it, told me I looked like either a third-rate porn actor, or a child molester, but that she couldn't quite make up her mind. Buh-bye, 'stache.

-Goatee: Girlfriend saw it, said I looked ten years older. Since she always said my "boyish looks" were one of the things that attracted her to me, the 'tee had to go.

-Soul patch: Mom saw it, simply said "nope". Away it went.

-Full beard: At this point (late last year), I had grown my hair down to my shoulders. Then one day, my aunt looked at me and told me she liked the look, because "it makes you look like Jesus". Got a buzzcut and a shave the next day.

So, it's been basically decided for me that I'm meant to always go clean shaven. And since the lack of facial hair helps keep the "boyish looks" thing going, I'm not complaining :D If I ever fall for a girl who prefers older guys, I can always grow the goatee back and make myself look 30-something :p)

Ive been wearing a goatee or about 10 years.
2 reasons:

1. Less to shave (which I dont really like doing)
2. I look dorky without it

Although I look 5 years younger without it,everyone I know thinks I look better with it.

JonZ brought up a good point...Even my MOM likes my goatee, so I guess that's a good reason :D

Seriosuly, I too look younger without one. I'm 32 and still get carded at bars so can you imagine how young I'd look without it
