It also has the first (to my knowledge) blu-ray release of the three color short LA CUCARACHA (1934) as a bonus feature!! :thumbs-up-smiley:

Have there been any reviews of this blu yet? Just curious, as my copy has been shipped, but it is not scheduled to arrive until Tuesday, and I'm curious what anybody else has had to say, while I anxiously await my copy.

I received my copy Tuesday and it is gorgeous considering the age of the movie.

Ho does La Cucaracha look? It's in 1080p yes?

it has some problems, the sound is tinny and scratchy. The color looks dull. However, I’m so glad to enjoy it. Just ignore the problems and enjoy.

La Cucaracha should be gorgeous. Original elements and dye transfer prints are available

    Hmmmmm......that gives me pause.

    Does it look like this?

or perhaps this? (There are two very different color timings out there, this one is from a dye transfer print from the early 1970's)

Does the version on disc improve on either one of those or are the above examples better looking? To be honest, I'm not all that interested in the main feature and would primarily be getting the disc for this supplement.

    Thanks in advance, Allen :)

I would disagree that the colors in La Cucaracha are dull. I would say just the opposite, that they are vibrant and in some cases, over the top. (When a character starts getting angry, he literally "turns red") Watching this on an OLED, I assumed that Natalie Kalmus intentionally insisted on the vivid day-glo colors we see in this short. Kino's release captures this well.

Will: I'd say it is much closer to the first sample you provided as far as color, but definitely brighter and warmer. (The colors are quite different on the blu ray than in that 2nd sample you show, and it doesn't have that card at the beginning explaining the dye transfer).

    I think it looks gorgeous.

For me, the sound is messed up on GLORIFYING. The main audio track has all the sound coming from the left channel. And the second track (commentary) seems at a really low volume. Has anyone else seen this?

Yes! I have been searching online in vain to see if I was the only one experiencing this problem on both my players. All the sound comes out of the left speaker on the main feature's audio track. Richard Barrios' commentary sounded okay, but he takes so many pauses between phrases before he finally reaches the end of a sentence. Still, it was an informative, interesting commentary.

Agree on the commentary. He's very knowledgeable about this film, but....he....takes....a...lot....of....pauses...

Only use a sound bar, so I didn't pick up on the directional issue with the soundtrack.
