I have a Panasonic Plasma TV, a Sony 350 blu ray DVD, direct tv HD DVR, and a Yamaha HTR-5560 receiver.

I need a new receiver but can't right now so I'm looking for advise on how to connect the surround sound. My receiver doesn't have HDMI connections so I have the DVD and DVR going into a switch and then out to the TV, TV only has 1 HDMI input. Then I have the optical plug going from the DVD and the DVR going into the receiver, but it just sounds like TV ound going through the speakers.

Not sure how to split the sound using the HDMI cables??

Any advise until I can recover from Christmas and get a proper receiver?

Why not use component for you DVR? You're not gaining much by using HDMI.

Connect each to your receiver using digital coax or optical cables.
