A friend just bought a 27" Toshiba 27A51 for her living room. After a quick calibration with Avia, the picture looks outstanding... but whenever you play letterbox material (whether on DVD or through her DSS), the picture looks all wrong. It's bowed out on the sides like a bow tie, and is very distracting. Is there any kind of fix for this? Maybe something in a service menu or something?

Yes the bowing can be adjusted via the service menu. Very little effort is used to calibrate the TV's at the factory (if any). Before you decide to go into the service menu, (If you do), make sure you know what you are doing. Being a new TV and if the problem is that distracting maybe you should have a service tech come over and do the calibration. The good news is that it is not a problem that a good clibration can not correct.

If you're going to go into the service menu, look for a Pincushioning adjustment in the service menu. After noting its present value, adjust it up and/or down until the lines are straight. There may also be "top pincushion", "bottom pincushion" and "corner pincushion" settings for fine tuning things as well. A service manual will have the menu options you need.
