I think what Ang Lee did with Billy Lynn in HFR 3D was much easier to take than any of The Hobbit films. (I agree that it revealed a lot of the setbound nature of Hobbit.) It wasn’t something I instantly fell in love with for Billy Lynn but it was interesting and I thought it had some merit. So I’m hoping this improves on that.

I think "get used to it" is the key issue. We all have literal lifetimes of movies at 24fps, so that's how we think movies should look.

It's not - it's just what we're accustomed to seeing...

    Lucky you!

The closest HFR 3D showing for me is 70 miles away and all of their showings have been sold out, all week.

This is getting weak reviews, but since it's included with A-list I figure: why not? Plus I'm curious to see my first HFR movie since The Hobbit, because I missed Ang Lee's last movie in the format.

I’ve spoken to people that have seen it and said it was a lot of fun.

More than ever there seems to be a disconnect between critics and audiences.

I’m seeing it at @Josh Steinberg ’s theater Saturday night. ;)

The only 120 fps HFR locations will be in Dolby Cinema auditoriums. Every other 3D format will be 60fps HFR.

Sometimes I think the majority of critics are off because 1. they view a movie as "trash," rather than realizing it's just a fun escapist movie, or 2. they view a movie as too serious or "highbrow," and trash it for that reason, rather than giving a challenging and well-made movie some credit.

Under category 2 I'd put The Goldfinch, which was mostly panned by critics (25% on RT), but which imho was a quality movie with emotion, beautiful cinematography, a complex story I'd never seen before, and they'd distilled down a 700 page book into an interesting two and a half hour film. The audience score on The Goldfinch is 72%.

Under category 1 I'd put Alita: Battle Angel. Alita got mixed reviews, although it still managed to get 61% on RT, but the audience score on Alita was 93%.

And then category 3, for me, would be a movie like Ad Astra, which I thought was a morose hunk of junk, but critics mostly liked it because it was "serious," giving it an RT of 83%. But the audience score for Ad Astra was 40%, which I'm guessing is a more accurate measure of how that film will be looked at in the long run.

Anyway, I'm hoping for some over-the-top action and silly sci fi fun with Gemini Man. Given that Ang Lee is the director, however, I'm also expecting some arty touches and intelligence here and there. We'll see.

I too did not see the Ang Lee film. But I did see all three of the Hobbit movies in HFR.

IIRC, the Hobbit movies were in 48 FPS. Gemini is 120 FPS, so I would be very interested in your assessment of how much different Gemini looks compared to the Hobbit movies. FWIW, I recall that with the Hobbit, the 48 FPS produced a *striking* difference. Some people hated it, thought it made the movie look too 'fake' and like a video game, other people (like myself) liked it, but everyone agreed it was very noticeable.

I am curious as to how noticeable 120 FPS is, especially given the proliferation of HFR video content the last few years. Is it maybe not so much a big deal?

To be clear, are you saying that ALL 3D showings of Gemini Man will be at 60 FPS? Meaning that if a theater anywhere is listing it as a 3D showing, that it will be in 60 FPS and not something less?

Yes. There are NO standard 24 fps 3D versions available. Anything listed as 3D will be a high frame rate version (being promoted as 3D+).

Proliferation? The only films released in HFR have been the three Hobbits and Billy Lynn.

Sadly I won't be able to see this for a few weeks because of Canadian Thanksgiving. I really want to see Will Smith fight Will Smith with a motorcycle!

I'll be honest: going tonight at 8, but the trailers don't wow me.

And a sidenote: when I got my ticket, I read this "3D+ IN HFR" and literally stared at it for a good minute or two. I had no idea what it meant until I Googled it.
