I doubt both will make it. Yes, I'd FAR far FAR far FAR far FAR prefer Mann's vision of the much richer Gates of Fire than the visually stunning, but ultimately simplistic, 300. As 300 is definitely coming, I doubt there is room for both.

Which might be OK. 300 lends itself to action epic movie status...without any hint of the intimate or seriousness. It's a comic book. Gates of Fire is much harder to adapt.

I happened to love the 300 book, and am eagerly anticipating it. Although it's romanticized, it was a whopping adventure tale.

I can't see why we cant have 2 300 Spartan movies, similar to "Tombstone" (Romantic Western) and "Wyatt Earp" (factual based western) which I think came out in within about a year or so of each other.

I love 300 as well. I meant no disrespect. It'll be a fun movie. but Gates of Fire is so far beyond it that they aren't even narratively comparable. And Michael Mann is a superior director to Zack Snyder. By about the same amount :)

But I am excited for 300. I am a little bent that it'll likely prevent Mann from adapting GoF though ;) Trust me, the "factual" book is pretty damn romantic as well.

I am glad I read this thread. While I am a big fan of 300, I never heard of Gates of Fire. Now I am going to have to pick up this book. It sounds great!

Question for ancient greek history buffs: while, the battle of therompylae justifyably gets all the attention, wouldn't it be interesting to see a movie on the Battle of Salamis, which pretty much decided that war? It was one of the great upsets in history, and full of turns of events that no fiction writer could dream up.

I think that Gates of Fire is in some far corner of development hell. I first heard of the project around the time of that article (2000) and absolutely nothing has come of it. With 300 coming out, I think it may be dead.

But at least we have 300. When I saw early pictures with Gerard Butler, it almost looked like gay porn. But the reviews are very encouraging. A big must-see for me.

A Battle of Salamis film would be great. There's so much of ancient history to explore. I'd love to see some more Egyptian-themed films myself outside of The Mummy.

When Gates of Fire was first being talked about, Bruce Willis and George Clooney were mentioned as both being in the film, with Mann directing.

That would have kicked some serious ass.

An article at CHUD got my attention regarding this particular dream project. The CHUD article might be based on this Variety piece.

Which is mostly about adapting Pressfield's most recent novel (Killing Rommel), but does include a Universal tidbit about GoF. In the great old days, Michael Mann was set to adapt the book. It'd be nice to see that happen. We had two animated bug movies, and two volcano movies, and even two meteor/asteroid/comet movies. Why not two Thermopylae movies

Not much THERE there, I admit. But Universal had to look at those 300 receipts.
