Well I guess it's that time of the year again, as pretty much ever major shot has been fired in terms of software. What are your thoughts on the best games of the year?

    My nominations are:

    GC: Metroid Prime
runners up: Super Monkey Ball 2, Animal Crossing

    Xbox: Steel Battalion
    runners up: Morrowind, Splinter Cell

PS2: Not sure here, I've bought at least 20 PS2 games I've enjoyed, but none really stick out. Maybe Suikoden 3 will when I play it.

Most tragically underrated: Shenmue 2, Wild Arms 3

Most overrated/biggest dissapointments: GTA:VC, Mario Sunshine

Sleeper hit of the year: Hitman 2, Deathrow

    Best visuals: Splinter Cell
    runner up: Metroid Prime

Best sending a system out in a blaze of glory game: Project Ikaruga

My list will be GC only, being that it is the only nest-gen console that I own!
Right now, based on the fact that I have had very limited time with Metroid Prime and Animal Crossing, my award for game of the year goes to...
    Eternal Darkness

Wow, James, I'm surprised to see it, but your opinions are very very close to mine. Typically people argue my opinions, but yours match mine pretty well. The fact that you even mention Hitman2 and Deathrow is shocking. I'm glad to see other people besides myself enjoyed those two games. Also, not only did you not mention GTA:VC as a GOTY, but you listed it as one of your biggest dissappointments. I'm proud. [IMG]
My GOTY nominations thus far are:
    -Hitman2
    -Deathrow
    -Mafia
    Worst Games of the Year:
    -GTA:VC
    -Bloodrayne
    -Conflict: Desert Storm

    For me it's easy,
Console - Metroid Prime. No contest here IMHO.
PC - Dungeon Siege. I'll problably get flack for this one, but I loved the game. Most fun I've had in co-op ever! Can't wait for a sequel.
It's a tough call this year. I can't remember a year that was so good for both consoles and the pc. I hope 2003 can compete.

Well, don't look for me to echo any disappointment in SMS. Unlike apparently most everybody here, I loved every minute I spent playing Sunshine, frustration and all.

Since I'm a poor schlub GameCube owner who hasn't even played Metroid yet, my own personal pick for Game of the Year is Eternal Darkness. That game was the most fun I've had on a console in years. Shame it did so badly. It's ironic that people bash Nintendo for making kiddie softs, then when they put out a very, very mature title (that plays very well) nobody buys it.

My biggest disappointment of the year? Endless console bashing and one-upmanship/elitism. Sure it's not a product, but it sure makes talking about products here a lot less fun sometimes.

PS2:Frequency (if it came out in 2002)
    Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    Xbox:Buffy the Vampire Slayer
    Aggressive Inline
Gamecube: ...mmm, well Hunter on the Xbox was great, and I can't think of anything else, so I'll say "Hunter".
I haven't gotten far enough with Splinter Cell, but so far it looks GotY-ish.

I think Metroid has scored so well by most publications and websites that it will get at least GameCube GotY, if not console and overall GotY also. It's ranked #2 overall (PC and console combined) at GameRankings.com

I'd say Metroid Prime is my GotY nomination, with an honorable mention to Eternal Darkness.

Gamecube: Metroid Prime. It's the only Gamecube game I own, but I'm glad I bought the console for it.
PS2: Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    Xbox: Jet Set Radio Future
PC: (t) Battlefield: 1942, Warcraft 3 (despite all of their faults).
Sleeper: (t) Hitman 2, Buffy: The Vampire Slayer

    Gamecube
    1. Metroid Prime
    2(tie). Eternal Darkness
    2(tie). Animal Crossing

    PS2
    1. GTA: VC
    2. Suikoden III

    Xbox
If we're going by the games that we own, I really can't name one. The only games I've bought from this years Xbox releases are NFL2K3, MechAssault, and NHL2K3. If I had to choose between those three, I would choose NHL2K3.

    GBA
    This is the toughest one...
    1. Metroid Fusion
    2. Castlevania: HoD

Those two games have been terrific in my estimation... it's hard to choose between, but I have a huge soft spot for Metroid, so it takes the crown.

Dave, Frequency was released in November of last year. I totally agree with you though that it should have been a game of the year though. I love that game.

My own pick for game of the year would have to go to Metroid Prime. I didn't expect it to make the transition to 3D very smoothly, but it did...and then some. The best reason yet to own a Cube.

Here's the other games I was fond of playing over the year:

    PS2:

    1. SOCOM - I still have yet to finish the first mission of this in single player. I bought it for the online component and had a blast playing with the HTF folk.

    2. Contra: Shattered Soldier - It feels like the Contra of old. And it kicks my ass like the Contra's of old.

    3. GTA Vice City: I know it's getting some backlash, but I enjoy the game...namely the great tunes!

    GAMECUBE:

    1. Mario Sunshine - It may not have been as revolutionary as the past Mario games, yet it was classic Mario gameplay. Plus, the level's where you lose your waterpack are just downright nasty. I loved it.

    2. Resident Evil - I know it's a remake. But the original Resident Evil is still my favorite in the series, followed by Code Veronica. The few extra pieces of the game plus a fresh coat of paint made for one spooky game.

    XBOX

    1. Morrowind - My most-played game of 2002. I have no idea how many hours I played this. A lot. It was the only single-player game I played the whole damn summer, in between work and school. The interesting thing is, I had more fun with all the sidequests than the main quest.

    2. Ghost Recon - Just got it, but I like it a lot. More fun online with the HTF crew.

    GBA

    1. Castlevania - Another great Castlevania game. While I liked the first GBA one better (the bosses were way cooler) I'll gladly take a 2D Castlevania anytime.

***Disclaimer: This list could easily change after I play Splinter Cell, Shenmue 2, some more Toejam, and Resident Evil 0. But it'll take a helluva game to impress me more than Metroid Prime.

My favorite time of the year (next to E3 that is). Game of the Year time![IMG]
My own picks broken down my category:
    Racing game of the year:
MotoGP (Xbox)-Fatastic physics combine with superb graphics and very good 5.1 audio. Its fun to play, requires skill, includes a great arcade style section and has a hefty simulation for the true race fans. The addition of online play is the icing on the cake.
    Sports game of the year:
Disclaimer: Im not a sports fan, never have been, never will be so this section is limited only what I have enjoyed and nothing more
Deathrow (Xbox) - Total shock and suprise of a game this is. Cursing, violence, good gameplay, a whole boatload of unlockable items and man is this puppy hard at later levels. My favorite sports oriented game this year.
    Shooter of the year:
Contra Shattered Soldier (PS2)- When you read my game of the year you'll wonder why it didn't win this category as well but to be truthful Contra is more "pure" shooter and deserves this award. Hard as a porn star in a room full of naked woman and the best Contra to come out in years. Winner! Hands down!
Honorable Mention: Ikaruga - I can't believe I almost forgot to include this game in my picks for the year. If you own a DC you NEED to own this game. Gorgeus graphics...KILLER BOSS BATTLES! Difficulty is (if you can belive this) as hard if not harder than Contra SS. Killer game and I am slapping myself for having to edit this selection back in and not remembering!
    Horror/Adventure game of the year:
Resident Evil Remake (GC): Ok so many people felt Eternal Darkness was superior but I found Resident Evil to be the complete package. Some of the most drop dead gorgeus visuals out there. Scary as hell atmosphere and an even more interesting retooled storyline. The gameplay is a bit dated but the game was so good most saw past it.(Including myself who take quite a bit of time getting used to the GC controllers D-pad).
    Runner-up: Fatal Frame (PS2/Xbox)
    Eternal Darkness (GC)
    Action/Adventure game of the year:
Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox): If you don't understand the concept of love yet you better go out and buy this game. Taking a more streamlined approach to the "tag" graffiti system favoring speed and tricks its just fun fun fun! The music is DA BOMB! The gamplay is pure Sega and the graphics are still mindblowing!
Honorable mention: Mark of Kri - Its too bad more folks out there didn't go out and buy Kri. The fighting system is a blast and this is one hell of an adventure game. Go out and pick it up. You wont regret it.
    Runners-up: Metroid Prime (GC)
    Mafia (PC)
    Splinter Cell (Xbox)
    Platforming game of the year:
Casltevania Harmony of Dissonance (GBA) - Bliss, pure unadulterated platforming bliss. I could not put it down and it made me yearn for a next gen Castlevania even more.
    Runners-up: Super Mario Sunshine (GC)
    Metroid Fusion (GBA)
    Sly Cooper (PS2)
EDIT: Have not played Ratchet and Clank so this category may change somewhat.
    RPG of the year:
Elder Scrolls 3 Morrowind (PC/Xbox): I have dumped 100 hours of my life easily into this game and I dont see an end in sight. I love this game. The most open ended experience available ANYWHERE. The world of Tamriel is so at your fingertips its almost real.
    Runners-up: Neverwinter Nights (PC)
    Anarchy Online (PC) (MMORPG)
    Kingdom Hearts (PS2)
    Online game of the year:
Mechassault (Xbox)- I've never had so much insane fun in a game online. Its simple, its deceptively easy but my god is it a TOTAL ABSOLUTE BLAST to play! This is Xbox Live's killer app and anyone picking up the service needs to own this game.
    Runner-up- Socom Navy Seals (PS2)
Some minor categories I've created because I feel they need mentioning:
Best retro update of the year:
Metroid Prime (GC)- Retro must have sold thier left arm or something because they did the impossible. They created a game that COMPLETELY captures the magic of the Metroid series. The game is just superb and its great to see Samus is back!
    Runners-up: Contra SS (PS2)
    Shinobi (PS2)
    Best concept that almost worked:
Blinx the Timesweeper (Xbox) (Time Controls) - This one could have been great. Small technical issues and some problems in the gameplay department hold it back. The time controls were not used to thier fullest and thats ashame. Artoon is right now working on a sequel so hopefullly Blinx 2 will be the real deal!
    Finally..My game of the year:
REZ (PS2/DC) (Release date Jan of 2002)-No game this year came close to equalling the irreplaceable experience that REZ brought to my home. The integration of music, gameplay and interesting visuals just completely defined my gaming experience for the year. The game is available for 20 dollars anymore folks. Get your booties out there and buy buy buy!
Honorable mention: Metroid Prime (GC) - Yes for many this is *THE* game this year and I share that feeling to an extent. Metroid is literally almost the perfect game. Outstanding graphics, compelling gameplay, excellent music. How could we have ever doubted Nintendo?! However for me, it just cant equal the absolute replay value of REZ and how much pure fun I had with that game. It does get a very deserved honorable mention from me because it was so very close to being #1 (and damn Ridley was a pain in my butt!)!
    Runners-up: Mafia (PC)
    Jet Set Radio Future (Xbox)
