If you have a GameCube, you may also want to consider the forthcoming Game Boy Player. It hooks onto the bottom of your GameCube and lets you play GBA/GBC/GB games on your TV with the standard Nintendo controller. I also think it will be a tad cheaper than the SP.
Also, I hear that (if you don't yet have a Cube) Nintendo will soon bundle the GB Player with the GameCube, ostensibly once they debut the GB Player. Something to consider, especially since you're exercising restraint at the moment.
