I very rarely watch tv, but i caught a glimpse of a commercial for FARSCAPE. It was very impressive...

Excuse my ignorance, can anyone briefly explain the show and the availability of the dvds etc??

Ahh, welcome to the wonderful world of FARSCAPE. The show is made by the Henson Company, who do all of the creature (and now digital) effects. It's basically about a scientist (John Crichton) who goes into orbit to test a theory and gets sucked through a wormhole and lands somewhere on the other side of the universe. He is brought aboard a prison ship (a living bio-mechanoid named Moya) that has been hijacked by it's alien prison mates. The show sees Crichton dealing with this strange new world and inhabitants but goes FAR BEYOND your standard Star Trek fare.
I'd hate to ruin anything for you with a full-on explanation. You really need to see this show for yourself. Just know that this show has it all. There is a ton of action, drama (emotional and psychological), humor and suspense. It is also the most imaginative and well-written TV show I have ever seen. My favorite thing about it is that you never know the real intentions of the leads. Everyone is capable of extreme loyalty or back-stabbing at any given moment. When you watch the show, you will understand. This show is always unpredictable.
If you live in the states, the DVD's are just getting to the 3rd season. They are excellent DVDs, with great video transfers and excellent DD 5.1 sound. They run about $15 per 2 episodes (22 episodes per season).

An astronaut named John Crichton, while flying an experimental spacecraft in the Earth's atmosphere, accidentally creates a wormhole and gets shot across the galaxy. He stumbles upon an interstellar space battle and ends up inside a living ship with alien prisoner escapees. That's a real brief explanation. I recommend getting all the season 1 DVDs out there right now. They are a bit pricey but prices have dropped on the volumes lately. Each disk is dual-layered for maximum video bitrate and features full 5.1 surround. And I think the show is 10 times better than any Trek from the past 5 years.

Yes, Season 4 starts Friday at 10pm EST (note: new time) on SciFi.

The beginning of a season is a good place to start watching a show. However, keep in mind that a great deal has happened in the first 3 seasons. Last Friday/Saturday SciFi was playing FARSCAPE for about 24 hours. Too bad you missed that, it would have been a good primer.

True, although they do give a little bit of info before starting an episode. Not a lot, but adequate. Just go ahead and watch the new season, and when you get to the previous seasons you can always treat it like your getting backstory. :)

Yes, definitely do that to get a feel for the characters first and you're viewing on Friday will be SO much more enjoyable.

Do a search for the long-winded reason why there are no season sets

Short version

ADV is a small company
There are many many hands in the Farscape pie
Much of ADV's distribution is done through Suncoast, who does not like big expensive box sets since they are a-big(especially since Henson wants to keep the ep count/disc low for optimal quality) and b-expensive and since they sell at SRP get much lower sales. C-Less upfront cost, so they can afford more custom supplements (like the outstanding commentaries!)

So you can either get best-of box sets, or all of them in single releases. Fan request and sales have allowed them to go to 2 disc at a time releases, and you can find the Season 1 discs for roughly $14-15 many places, (DVDPrice search is showing $12 on some of them) it's not that bad.

For anyone with a multi-region player capable of converting PAL to NTSC, the first 10 episodes of Farscape Season 3 are already out in Britain. The next box set (probably of episodes 11-14) streets on 7/1. I started out buying the US releases, but quickly got hooked and am now getting them from Britain. They look superb on a Malata.

The Boxsets in Britain all have 4 or 5 episodes and run about $29, shipped price.

I don't have cable so have to watch them as they come out on DVD, though I have seen a few episodes taped off the SciFi channel and found the VHS copies unwatchable compared to the DVDs.

I am in love with Claudia Black. I am on my second viewing of all episodes from season one. They can't keep the DVD's coming fast enough for me. Since I became a fan almost at the end of season 3 I have missed quite a bit. I am recording all new episodes. I have 15 episodes of season 3 recorded and have seen 10 of season 2. After viewing the the upcoming disc's I will start watching my taped episodes.

if you equiptment supports pal then you should get them from europe. Over here we are on season 3 but the first two seasons can be had for really cheap. I get mine from URL=http://www.play.com]play247[/url] .They are only £12:99 for on average 4 episodes and you get free shipping.

I paid ~$175 for the entire first season buying them individually, so you'd be doing better than I did.
