Nominate:
Die Hard - it's the French Connection of the era, took action movies to a new plateau

Safe - proof that slow pacing doesn't have to be boring; thought-provoking on many levels

Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters - a tour de force of technique

American Movie - the most watchable (and re-watchable) documentary I've ever seen, and one of the best love letters to cinema that I know of

Wow... while I was composing my post, I had both these movies on my list, but had to cut them to get down to 4.

2nd Being John Malkovich & Safe (though Walter's right, while it should be, it really has no chance in Hell of becoming a "classic" in the sense of something that is widely seen and loved).

In my perfect world, I'd be nominating things like Humanite, Code Unknown, What Time Is It There?, Cure, etc, etc, but objectively, these aren't going to become classics to the general population, though I hope they will appear on the next Sight & Sound poll.

Nominate
My Neighbor Totoro
Grave Of The Fireflies
Far From Heaven
The Secret of Roan Inish
The Nightmare Before Christmas

SECOND:
12 Monkeys
The Fugitive
Field of Dreams
Platoon (although this one already has 'classic' feel to it)
Rain Man (same here)

NOMINATE:
1) Back to the Future (holds up well, and remains as clever and awesome as ever)
2) Ghostbusters (doesn't feel dated at all, 80s' best)
3) Ferris Bueller's Day Off (even if it's undoubtedly an '80s film, I think it speaks to the youth of any generation)
4) Happy Gilmore (it's been hip to label Adam Sandler films bad, but this one will be appreciated for the comic gem it is, in due time)
5) Midnight Run (more people need to see this, it's a brilliant film, and reaches Newman/Redford buddy comedy quality)

Nominate:

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Lost Boys
The Princess Bride
Return of the Jedi
Starman
TRON

I think this could easily go to 128 films. There have been many great movies made in the last 20 years.

These movies are among the many that I also consider classics from the past 20 years: The Addams Family, The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, Airplane II: The Sequel, Beetlejuice, Fright Night, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Interview with the Vampire, Labyrinth, Ladyhawke, The Last Starfighter, Little Shop of Horrors, The Mask, Men in Black, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?

Back in a bit with more Seconds.

We really ought to do 128, as there are several I (we?) have forgotten that will be true classics. Jurassic Park, for example.

Well, it looks like we're going to 128.

List updated - we're up to 78 films.

Angelo: good call on Ju Dou, though I think Red Sorghum is even better. ;)

Chuck: thanks for nominating Mishima. :emoji_thumbsup:

How about some more John Sayles? I think Limbo will hold up...

Other suggestions:

The Abyss
The Commitments
Fitzcarraldo
Gettysburg
Hannah and Her Sisters
Jean de Florette/Manon of the Spring
The Man in the Moon
(1991)
Once Were Warriors
Round Midnight
The Sweet Hereafter
Tucker: The Man and His Dream
