Someone in the thread emailed me through the site and thought I left the thread because people offended me, so I thought I should pop back on here and post again to clear it up. I wasn't offended by anything that was posted in the thread at all. I left because there's nothing more I can contribute here. I understand how frustrating it is for you guys, and please know that I'm doing everything I can behind the scenes to get information I can post. I hound people at CBS once a week for new information (blocking my number so they don't know it's me calling :D).
I should have provided more explanation as to why I was leaving, so there it is. Now that I've cleared that up, you can go back to playing the guessing game, and I'll continue to try to get an official comment from someone at CBS.

Speaking on behalf of TVShowsOnDVD, if it weren't for that site, I'd have no clue as to what shows were coming out on DVD.
    Wait...then I wouldn't be spending so much $$$ on discs. :P
Seriously, TVSOD is my go-to site for everything new and old on DVD.
Thank you, Gord, for all you do for both the fans, the studios, and Amazon.
    Sincerely. :)

I will be watching more of my set this Christmas. I'm half way through season 2 and have had not one complaint so far. All the music is there and not one note of anything Mark Heyes-ish.
I'm sorry that not everyone was able to get a set :(

I still hold out hope that the set will be released with the music intact. We'll have to wait and see at some point in the new year.

Hey, best wishes for happy holidays and a happy new year to everyone here. I read a lot of threads here on HTF, but the ones on The Fugitive are often the busiest, so while it's not really feasible to say happy holidays in every thread, doing so here gets to quite a lot of knowledgeable people who have great taste in DVDs.

Sorry I don't want to read through all 29 pages, but I had to ask.... WHY would the original music of The Fugitive even be an issue?
For the first 3 years of this ABC series it was mostly from the CBS music library (particularly their westerns) and
ABC (The Untouchables often heard in The Fugitive's 3rd Season). However, that was "stock music" which was
public domain material even back then.
The final color season recycled familiar music (from another defunct ABC series The Outer Limits) as well and also new compositions
by Quinn Martin hiring Dominic Frontiere, who composed OL's music during that show's first season.
I've seen several versions of The Fugitive on cable TV stations. Most were complete, except for the re-edited opening credits
that were done for the A & E network and WWOR EMI Service in the 1990s.

Same here. I find it very strange to say the least, that a product is first released then pulled back without a word of explanation, when they know full well there's a huge fan base out there waiting and wondering what's going on.

If I remember correctly, they couldn't find the documents that said whether they did or didn't own it so rather than spend a little bit of time figuring it out, they took the music out.

Really off-topic, having only a passing Quinn Martin relationship to this thread, but basically of minor interest perhaps to thread participant Jeff Willis, who is fond of the series COMBAT!:

On the night of January 5th/the morning of January 6th, 2012, the MeTV network (which is currently airing THE FUGITIVE, by the way), has scheduled the following at 3 and 4 AM, back-to-back:

    COMBAT! - "The Outsider"
    12 O'CLOCK HIGH - "The Outsider"

    http://metvnetwork.com/schedule.php?date=01/05/2012

    What are the odds that:

    a) two different series would have episodes that share the same title name? (A: Actually pretty good. Many different series episode titles over the years have been the same.)
    b) the two series in question would happen to be re-running on the same channel concurrently? (A: Less so, but still possible.)
    c) the two same-named episodes would be scheduled back to back? (A: It boggles the mind.)

Now back to our normally-scheduled thread about THE FUGITIVE: MOST WANTED box set.

    Harry

I have went through all of Season 1-3 and the first DVD of Season 4. There are music cahnges to juke box and lounge, and IMO, most of them were not necessary because they were in another episode and were still present. I did not find any back ground score that has been replaced by Heyes. It appears the Heyes is all gone and the original have been restored. Here are the changes I have noticed.
    Season 1 Volume 1
    DVD 1
“Fear In A Desert City”- DAMAGED PRINT. No music changes but the film is damaged starting at time frame 1:10 and shows up throughout the entire episode off and on.
    DVD 2
“Decision In The Ring” – The music in Act 1, playing on the piano at time frame 11:53 has been changed. In the original airing the song is “It had to Be You”. Surely CBS/Paramount can obtain the rights to this one. It is a well known and popular song.
    DVD 3
“Nightmare at Northoak” DAMAGED PRINT – At time frame 26:08, in Act 3, there is a, the best I can explain, a horizontal “ghost” or distortion line that moves from top to bottom of the picture and ends around the 27:34 mark. The entire episode flickers at different points. The was not present on the NU Ventures VHS.
    DVD 4
“The Girl From Little Egypt” – The music playing in the lounge at time frame 36:00 in Act 3 has been changed. This is music that was playing in the bar in “Fear In A Desert City” in the “The Branding Iron” and also playing in the bar in the episode Somebody To Remember”. No reason to have changed this music.
“Home Is The Hunted” – DAMAGED PRINT -The print used seems to be in very poor shape. There is a lot of flickering in the picture. This does not show up in the print used by NU Ventures.
    Season 1 Volume 2
    DVD 1
“The Garden House” – In Act 3 at time mark 22:27 all the way through 26:38 the party music has been changed and mixed way too loud for the scene.
“Where The Action Is”- Act 1 at 8:28 music has been changed. This is music that was playing in the bar in “Fear In A Desert City” in the “The Branding Iron” and also playing in the bar in the episode “Somebody To Remember”. No reason to have changed this music. But at 10:26 the music changes and the music it changes to is the original night of broadcast
In Act 3 the music in the strip club at 26:19 has been changed and remains so all through the strip club scene. At 29:26 the scene changes back to the casino and the music here has been restored to original night of broadcast.
    DVD 3
“Taps For A Dead War”- In Act 1 at time frame 1:43 the Roller Rink Music has been changed and remains changed all through out that scene until time frame 5:09.
Act 2 at time frame 12:12 the Roller Rink music has been changed.
The music playing in the bar and the lounge appears intact as original.
    DVD 4
“The Homecoming”- Radio music in Act 2 at 22:26 has been changed. At 22:56 the radio music has been restored to original night of broadcast
    Season 2 Volume 1
    DVD 1
“Man in a Chariot” - Lounge Music
“Worlds End”- Lounge music/juke box music
    DVD 3
“Cry Uncle”- The print is damaged. The print used by Nu Ventures in the 90’s did not have any damage so there is a better print that can be used. Music is 100% intact.
    Season 2 Volume 2
    DVD 3
“Everybody Gets Hit in the Mouth Sometime” - Radio music changed. No reason they should have changed it. It is the exact same music used in “Detour on a Road going Nowhere” on the thugs radio. The music in both scenes in the Lounge has been changed also. Other than that it is complete.
    Season 3 volume 1
    DVD 1
“Middle of a Heat Wave” - Music playing in the road house has been changed.
    DVD2
“Three Cheers for Little Boy Blue” - Music has been changed playing on the record player at the party in Act 3. In Act 4, the music coming from the bar “The Talley Ho” has been restored to original.
“All the Scared Rabbits” - The Music playing in the car on the radio has been changed from the original airing.
    DVD 3
“Landscape With Running Figures Part 2”: In the bar, the second song that the girl is playing on her radio has been changed while the first one remains intact as original.
“Set Fire To A Strawman” The piano music in the bar at the end of ACT 1 has been changed. That bar music is the very same music from the pilot episode that Monica was playing on the piano and the music playing in the bar “The Branding Iron” and also playing in the bar in the episode “Somebody To Remember”. No reason to have changed this music. It is still in the pilot and Somebody To Remember” so there is no reason for it to be removed from this episode. In ACT 2, the music in the bar has also been changed here as well.
“Stranger In A Mirror” The opening narration at the start of Act 1 is distorted.
    DVD 4
“The Good Guys and The Bad Guys”- Carnival Music has been restored to original. The
Party music playing on the juke box has been changed in ACT 1. No need to have changed this since the party music on the juke box is the same music that is being played in “Fun and Games and Party Favors” from Season 2. On the Season 2 DVD this has been restored so it should be here as well.
At the beginning of ACT 2 the party music is has been restored to original. But at 18:08 the music has been changed. I think this may be the same music that was removed from ACT 1 and if it is, it is the same as “Fun and Games and Party Favors”. Also in ACT 2 around 20:10 music has been changed.
All of the music in, background and party and carnival ACT 3 and 4 has been restored to original.
    Season Three Volume 2
    DVD 1
"Not With A Whimper"– The Music that was missing from Act 1 on the previous set is still missing. Other than that the episode has been restored 100%.
“Echo of a Nightmare” at 2:50 Jukebox music in the restaurant “Sugar Bowl” has been replaced. The lounge music in “Echo of a Nightmare” at time frame 7:12 has been changed. This is the same music once again from the pilot episode that Monica was playing on the piano and the music playing in the bar “The Branding Iron” and also playing in the bar in the episode “Somebody To Remember”. No need to have replaced that.
    DVD 2
“Running Scared:” The Lounge Music in Act 1 at time frame 8:56 has been changed. Once again no need to because once again from the pilot episode that Monica was playing on the piano and the music paling in the bar “The Branding Iron” and also playing in the bar in the episode “Somebody To Remember”. No reason to have changed this music.
“The Chinese Sunset” The music playing on the jukebox starting at 4:59 has been changed. ACT 3 the party music starting at 32:01 has been changed and stops abruptly at right around 34:38. It doesn’t fade out like the original: it just stops. (This is a really botched replacement work here). At the 34:47 point the music is restored to the original music used. (“The Chinese Sunset” has a real jarring, in my opinion, musical mess up at the 34:38 point. Due to this, this is the worst musical error, or replacement, I have seen in this set so far.)
    DVD 4
“In a Plain Paper Wrapper” – The music playing on the juke box in Act 3 in “The Bun and Burgers” restaurant at time frame 34:50 has been changed. This same music appears in “Fun and Games and Party Favors” so there was no reason to have changed it here.
    Season 4 Volume 1
    DVD 1
“The Last Oasis”- The music in the ice cream parlor in ACT 2 has been changed at time frame 18:20. This is the same music used in “Fun and Games and Party Favors” from Season Two. CBS/Paramount has restored this in “Fun and Games and Party Favors” so there is no reason that it needs to be changed in this episode.
“Death Is The Door Prize”- ACT 1 at time frame 3:35 the Hi-FI music has been changed but at 4:48 the music changes back to original and remains so through the rest of ACT 1 until time frame 6:25 when the music is changed again. The bit of music that was restored in ACT 1 at the 4:48 mark was used in “Fun and Games and Party Favors”. It is restored here and in “Fun and Games and Party Favors” yet removed in other episodes like when it was played on the juke box in the episode “A Palin Paper Wrapper” and “The Last Oasis”. At time frame 31:14 the music playing on the radio has been changed.
“The Sharp Edge of Chivalry”- In Act 2 at the 34:32 mark dialogs has been changed. In the original you hear Barry Morse and Richard Anderson talking. Morse says “There’s no other way out?” to which Richard Anderson says “No.” On the DVD version this dialog has been changed to an unknown actor saying “It’s beginning to look like he got away”.

Nice work, John. Thank you for the nice recap. It looks like, according to your list here, season 2 is now more perfect than season one. Stunning and something I never would have believed. I have seen the season two episodes and I concur with your list. It's very satisfying to watch these shows with our full underscore restored. The "incidental" music changes, for the most part, work well and blend in well. I can live with them.
If the set does come out, repaired to the same degree as this recalled set has been, it will earn my purchase and a letter of appreciation from me to CBS for finally making it right. Come on CBS, make it happen.

Harry, thanks for the info on the 2 QM shows. Yes, Combat! is one of my grails :). That's interesting about those 2 episodes airing like that. Thanks for the MeTV link. That's an impressive linup they are carrying on that sub-channel. MeTV isn't availale in my area yet.
Well, this is interesting. We'll hope that they didn't recall the box set for the purpose of removing inavertantly added pop tunes/lounge music into the recalled version vs the original vol sets.
John, thanks for a very informative post above. I'm assuming that you were referring to the original CBS volume split-season sets in your comparisons. It gets more puzzling as I just did an A/B comparison between the original CBS vol release discs and the recalled set and they're not exactly the same in a couple of episodes where you provided your detailed comparison of the originally-aired episodes vs the CBS versions.
I only had time to check a couple but here's what I found. It's a mixed bag of being identical (orig CBS vol discs vs recalled discs): I'll quote some of John's post here and compare what I saw and heard in these comparisons.
This was identical between the 2 CBS discs.
This also was identical. I saw the same video defect in both CBS discs.
Here's where it got weird. At the 2:50 point in this episode, the backscore music was similar but not identical. It appeared to me as if the same music was used but wasn't in sync between the 2 CBS discs.
At the 7:12 point, the music was not the same in the lounge scene. The original vol disc sounded like a piano trio while the recalled box set disc sounded like a small-group jazz band. What may have happened is that CBS used the same artist music but may have not sync'ed it with the video/film scenes identically between the 2 CBS discs. This sounded similar to what may have occured at the 2:50 point in the "Sugar Bowl" restaurant.
What this seems to indicate to me is that, for some reason, CBS is having a heck of a time getting this series' release to closely match the original broadcast versions, if that is part of the reason for the recall of the box set.
I still counted on CBS removing the pop tunes/lounge music due to copyright/clearance issues, as they did in the original volume releases. If they restored all of the non-Rugolo CBS Library (and maybe the small amount of Capital Music) que's in the re-release, I'll be content with the product. From all of the checking that's been done with the recalled set, they've removed all of the "Heyes" backscore and restored the que's with the exception of that silent section in "Not Without a Whimper".
The question remains as to the detailed reason for the recall. Perhaps some info will be forthcoming in January.
It would be a bonus, imo, if the re-release restored all of the pop/lounge music as that's not CBS's normal procedure in these older show DVD sets.
Perhaps one of the reasons for the technical-issue recall was that they were made aware of the backscore/video syncronization issues after the box set distribution got underway to the e-outlets.

Thank you John K for the info. I agree with Steve L.,could deal with this set as long as Hayes is gone and Rugolo/Capitol music is intact. OH CHRISTMAS TREE , OH CHRISTMAS TREE , WHERE IS THE FUGITIVE COMPLETE SERIES ?:(
