Price increase time....

Max has announced a price increase on the streaming service’s ad-free plans. The standard ad-free plan will cost $16.99 / month instead of $15.99, while the 4K ad-free will cost $20.99 / month instead of $19.99.

The price increase will go into effect today for new subscribers. Existing subscribers can expect to see the increase from their next billing cycle on or after Thursday, July 4th. Max’s price hike also affects the service’s ad-free yearly plans, with the standard ad-free plan going up to $169.99 / year from $149.99, and the 4K ad-free plan going up to $209.99 / year from $199.99.

The service’s $9.99 / month (or $99.99 / year) ad-supported subscription will stay the same price

I would be canceling if I didn’t get this service free of charge. I just don’t watch it enough so it’s not worth the price.

I can see a point soon where I will be canceling HBO which I have had for decades.

I get HBO as part of my cable plan, which includes MAX. However, if MAX subscription prices are going up there is no doubt so is standard HBO channel service.

I have had enough of streaming services and their escalating costs.

FWIW, if you have an Amex CC, you might have an offer for $25 cashback good for one of the ad-free annual plans to maybe make them enticing enough. I'd probably do it if the 4K/top plan is more like $110-120, but probably not at $140 -- in my case, the Amex offer expires end of Sept, so maybe WBD will eventually offer a good enough deal for me to bite, heh...

I wrote that back in March. Guess there's not much hope for that better, more enticing deal coming... unless maybe Amex offers it instead... :P

Ah well, probably just gonna do a month at some point for House of the Dragon and a few other exclusives. There really seems not much on the service (and increasingly less since the WBD merger/revamp) that interest me anyway...

I'll be interested to see what the combo price is going to be for the rumored HBO+Disney+Hulu package (ad free, if I want commercials I'll just stick with cable). And if they're going to segment or exclude 4K/DV--looking at you HBO, which you did to punish those of us who continue to get Max as part of our historical AT&T cell plan. If the ad-free combo package comes with full 4K/HDR/DV for all services (assuming the shows support it) and is under $60 a month, I may be tempted. If it's over $60, I'll likely just stick with HBO 1080p free through my cell plan and just buying the Disney discs for shows that I want to see.

So they are raising the price $1 per month if you are paying month to month, but are raising the annual fee by $20? Seems like they are really screwing over their more loyal customers. I would guess this will get more people to stop with the annual renewal and go month to month for short periods of time. I don't currently subscribe to Max, but this is what I am doing with Disney+ / ESPN+. Right now, I am on hiatus with both of those services, too.

Early reddit threads I've seen re: the new Max/Dis/Hulu ad-free bundle seem to indicate it will not include the 4K/Dolby VIsion/Atmos level of Max.

So it looks like it's a no-go for me and I'll be staying with the free Max from my old grandfathered AT&T cellular plan. The fact that they continue to reserve the 4K/DV/DA service behind their highest tier payroll is a financial model I can't in good conscience support.

The TCM or film classic content seems to be frozen for some time now. Nothing leaves, nothing is added. I miss the days when HBOMAX would get the latest restorations of classic films. Sometimes ahead of their Warner Archive debut but I think that was mostly during Covid when they had a virtual TCM Festival.
