Very important HDMI 2.1 spec upgrade to HDMI 2.1a that will enhance HDR picture quality.

HDMI Forum & HDMI Licensing Administrator groups preview HDMI 2.1a in pre-CES update, highlighting how Source-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) optimizes HDR imagery.

I dunno. Picture quality continues to improve while the ability of my aging eyes to appreciate said improvements continues to degrade.

That enables the source to adapt this content to the specific display’s HDR, SDR and dynamic HDR capabilities. Integrators should note the feature is very applicable to the gaming market, Harrell adds.
Any chance this will be used to benefit projectors? If could tone mapping could be found in a $150 AppleTV or $50 Roku, to enable a $5000 projector some of the HDR capability currently requiring a $10k+ projector purchase, that would be amazing.

It's up to the manufacturer if they want to design their TVs and or long and UST projectors with one of the new chipsets and this new HDMI 2.1a firmware in their display devices.
