The cliffhanger was pathetic!!
*** Spoilers ahead; but I assume anybody reading this has already viewed the episode ***
I can see it now: As the season opens next year, she's living with Ross while he helps out with his baby, while she's engaged to Joey??!!
And there's rumors out there that she may be pregnant in real life. What then? Is she going to be carrying Joey's baby (who she's engaged to) while living with Ross, who's helping out with his baby? Or will she (more likely) move in with Joey with Ross dropping in all the time to be with the baby? How weird will that be??
I dunno'; I think they're carrying this Friends' concept a little bit too far now!!

the few episodes before this one were horrible. I dont think i laughed out loud once. But this one had me goin'. Chandler was back to his witty-self, and Joey and Pheobe were hilarious.

Tough cliffhanger to handle, though.

Good show.

I was surprised to see Janice again. As always, it's nice to see her finding herself somehow torturing poor Chandler. I also thought we might see Chandler and Monica getting kicked out of the hospital after the nurse caught them together. Speaking of which: I wonder if Monica will be pregnant next season.

I couldn't help but think that it would be a nice bookend next season if Joey and Rachel's wedding took place in the series finale, thus bringing her full circle, responsible for her life and her daughter's along with finally making it through her own wedding (non-drunken and non-Vegas, of course). Joey will have to explain the ring situation to Ross and Rachel, though; I'm not sure either will take well to it.

I can't wait for next season's premiere...

Now repeat after me, Andrew - do NOT open threads until you are fully awake or at least without reading the full title first. I now know the ending of this series and it won't be shown in the UK for about a month.

Okay, please can some kind soul put me totally out of my misery and give a very brief synopsis of the finale?

I'm not totally surprised by the news, though on paper it sounds rather lame. I think a possible reason for it was to allow Rachel to get pregnant again 'responsibly' in case the actress gets in pod in real life (though if she did, by the next series is filming she'd be heavily pregnant again - what'll they do, move forward in time 6 months?). Another accidental pregnancy thanks to Ross would stretch credulity and from a casual pick-up would lose her audience sympathy.

Incidentally, is Janice the only character other than the six friends who has been in every season (okay, in one season you just heard her voice on tape), with the exception of the Gellers and Ursula?

The cliffhanger was stupid. It can be solved in one sentence: Joey says "Look what I found under Ross' jacket".

Lame.

But otherwise it was a decent episode.

It appeared as though Joey was about to say just that when she agreed to marry him. That's why he was holding the ring up.

He can't say that now because

1. He doesn't want to hurt her in that fashion; especially on the day that her baby was born.

2. He really does love her.

I agree that Joey's going to have a hell of a time explaining this to Ross; but Ross also loves her and also doesn't want to hurt her. It could also be argued that Ross more than had his chance to make his move on her if he really wanted to. Heck, he's been living with her for months while she's been pregnant with his baby!

Quite a dilemma among "friends", wouldn't you say?

from Joey's point of view though, Ross could have simply been waiting for the right time to pop the question. so i hope there is a quick one-scene resolution to this cliffhanger and they can get on with the next season...

i think you hit on what will happen. Season ending cliffhanger, but will be quickly resolved in the first episode of the next year. Then Ross and Rachel will spend that year with the series final episode their wedding. The Joey storyline is over, they just threw that in to create a sense of 'what if' over the summer...

Okay, was I the only one who thought when Janice arrived that her baby was going to be Chandlers. Right cause Chandler disappeared right before his wedding for a few days, and that was when we found out 'someone' was pregnant. I thought that could have been an interesting twist. ahwell.
As for Joey/Rachel, I am not quite sure how I feel about it yet, but I didn't like the way Rachel just said yes. We didn't get to see a romantic relationship blossom, they will have to do that through their marriage, which can't be good. Sure their friend but... I've vented now...
Funny episode. :)

I liked the episode and the season overall. I agree that the confusion will be wrapped up in an episode or two and by the end of the series next season, Ross and Rachel will finally tie the knot, Chandler and Monica will have a baby (or at least be expecting) and move to the burbs, Joey will move to Hollywood and start his spin off series (there's been rumors) and Phoebe will wind up with David the Scientist Guy (or someone else).

I enjoyed the episode. Except, for the last scene. I think the whole Joey/Rachel relationship is ridiculous. I too am hoping that it is resolved quickly. I don't know anyone(except the shows writers) that like them together. I agree that if next year is the last. It will be about Rachel/Ross getting married, Monica & Chandler having a kid and in the big finale Joey & Phoebe finally get together.

I totally forgot that the season finale was 1 hour and my dishplayer just recorded the first 30 minutes!!!

It is a shock to read how the episode ended. Anyone know if they'll re-run it anytime soon?

But if you wanted to ratchet up the angst, Joey goes through and proposes and Rachel does accept, and Ross then walks in on them, and he can't just stand there and propose to Rachel and spill the beans on the ring because Rachel has made her choice. No, Ross was simply too late in realizing that he could have made it work between him and Rachel. It would look like a desperation marriage proposal on Ross's part, and Rachel would not want a marriage proposal born of pity from Ross. Suppose this is the one time Joey becomes selfish and goes for Rachel (All's fair in love and war) because, well, Ross had plenty of chances, and this is Joey's shot for happiness.

Mine showed the episode as 1 hour-long show. Not sure what happened to you.

I actually thought that next week was the finale but regardless, I am done with this show unless this BS cliffhanger is fixed in the next show, whenever it is.

I am so tired af all the lies and deceit NBC shows have shown over the past couple of years in how they promote their shows and stupid crap like this Joey stealing the ring proposal.

So Jennifer Aniston wasn't really pregnant for the taping of this season? That was just a prosthetic belly? If it was...that's the best looking prosthetic belly I've ever seen! :D
My prediction is along the lines with Paul and others. Nothing is going to come out of the "proposal" and it will be quickly resolved.
I also predict that it will take Chandler and Monica all season to actually get pregnant. With the season ending with their "announcement."

...but I didn't like the way Rachel just said yes.
I agree, in fact, she didn't say "Yes", she said "Sure". Remember, Rachel is in a very emotional state, with hormones probably still raging. Plus, she was reeling from her conversation with Janice. She would probably rethink ANY commitment she made in that state pretty quickly.
I'm with those who think this will get resolved pretty quickly. Joey didn't actually propose, plus the fact that the ring was given to Ross by his mother will come out. Finally, Joey is a stand-up guy. Whatever his latent feelings for Rachel, he couldn't live with these circumstances.
Finally, the writers have worked VERY hard the last few months to get us to care about Ross & Rachel as a couple again, and they actually succeeded (mainly by bringing back the Ross of the first few seasons). I can't believe they'd throw that away. The show will end next year with the long awaited Ross/Rachel wedding, something that they started setting up in the very first episode of the series.
As for the rest of the characters - I think LarryDavenport nailed it. ;)

Stereotypically, it's not usual for a new single mother to latch onto security over waiting for love (being pragmatic over romantic), so if Rachel were to continue with Joey because she feared not having a man there for her and Emma, it's totally understandable given the circumstances, plus Joey's professed his love for her, but she was in a "different" place and could not reciprocate his feelings for her at the time.

Matt Le Blanc said in EW that it was one of the ideas suggested, but he didn't seem to like it. I personally think it'd be a great idea, I like the character and it's the only one that could carry a series by itself.
