Thanks for the link. I had not heard about this. I'm surprised that only two characters were being cut. There was probably a lot of pressure to cut costs before starting next season.

I agree that it would have been difficult to keep Smash as a regular since he was off to college. The show's focus should stay on the high school team.

I'm just glad they decided to give it another season. I understand it was very expensive to produce.

How expensive could it be? Because it's on directv's channel 101; last year, they bought the daytime soap Passions, and ran it for a year--then cancelled it again because it was too expensive. Hell--nobody watches that channel in the first place. You ONLY get it if you have directv, and that's hardly everyone in the U.S.

Anyway--seems to me that a primetime show with a huge cast would cost a hell of a lot more than a daytime soap. Let's just HOPE that "God loves football..."

I have heard that the on location shooting of the show makes it more expensive. Even if it isn't that expensive Directv doesn't have the resources of a major TV studio like the show had before.

I thought NBC was picking up part of the production costs, as they are running this in the spring after it airs on DirectTV. Or is that wrong? I thought this was a chance to cut the costs in half. I can't imagine DirectTV paying 100% and then NBC saying they have rights to air as a midseason replacement.

I think having Smash go was smart. He's off to college, and they closed that chapter in Season 2. What more can you really do with that character now that he's graduated?
