I'm a bit behind in reading some of my newsletters and blogs, so I just came across this item which David Pogue (NYT tech columnist) posted to his blog last month. I thought it might be of interest/service to some here.

http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2006/...ogues-posts-4/

According to Pogue, there's no catch, other than the US domestic long-distance charge to the Iowa number, easily circumvented by most cell phone plans which include nationwide long distance. Other than that, he says it's exactly what it says it is...totally free international phone service.

Anybody tried it? I don't currently have a need for such a service, but it seems like a nice break for those who do.

I did, some weeks ago.

Tried France & Spain. Didn't work. I suspect it's because I was calling cell phones. Tolls to cell phones are a premium in much of the world, and most likely beyond the scope of this service. I have not tried land lines. YMMV.

The article says it doesn't work with Cell phones although the company is trying to negotiate with major cell phone carriers.

I just left a free message on my parents answerphone in the UK, via skype.
