Fox's HKL commentary update (1 Viewer)

I'm not sure if this has been covered here yet, but Bey Logan's commentaries will not be on the US versions of the upcoming Hong Kong Legends releases. He responded via email to a person in this thread.

Firstly, thanks for your kind words regarding the commentaries. You're absolutely right regarding the rationale for their exclusion. My friend Peter Poon, who heads Fortune Star, believes that American audiences don't want to hear my British accent. If you want to share your opinions with him, his email is mailto [email protected] , but please be polite, and don't give the impression that I asked you to write on my behalf! My feeling regarding the commentaries is that I'm happy to be wanted and not there, rather than there and not wanted!

I believe the new prints of the films are absolutely stunning, so it may be worth buying them anyway. I will!

Regarding 'Snake In The Eagle's Shadow' and 'Drunken Master', they will be re-released by Hong Kong Legends, but I don't have any idea of the dates yet.

I think Bey Logan's commentaries are some of the best around. I wouldn't part with my DVDs of The Killer or The Big Boss under any circumstances mainly due to his informative commentaries. I almost sent back my Dutch Ichi The Killer simply because his commentary was not there as advertised in advance. Those of you who aren't multi-region will really be missing out.

Do they really believe Americans are that stupid that we wouldn't listen to a commentary just because of a British accent?

What? English accent? I guess that's why no English actor has ever made it big in the US and the Harry Potter movies have been such flops.

I will probably continue buying the British HKL discs, but I sent the guy an e-mail just to support a good cause.

I wonder if they could release Snake In The Eagle's shadow uncut with the R2 HKL extras?

FYI: Looks like the final specs are still under review, including Bey commentaries.

I'd encourage anyone who has an interest to drop a polite email ASAP to Mr. Peter Poon @ Fortune Star, as Jeff referenced at the top of this thread. I believe there is time to lobby for the final specs.

I tried the email address provided to start this thread and got a response from Poon today. Looks like his email address is [email protected]. In my original email I said I could "only guess" that the reason Bey's commentary was dropped was due to American audiences not wanting to hear a British accent. I said my guess was based only on the initial Fox marketing specs.

Here's the strong response I received by email from Poon:

Firstly Thank you for your interest and support of our DVDs.

We do NOT know where you got the information on us NOT including the audio commentary because of the English accent. This information passed to you is totally fault. We would like to clarify that we are currently reviewing the special feature for our DVDs and will review all elements especially the audio commentary for our feature releases.

Once, again, we Thank you for your support on Asian films and hope you will enjoy our DVDs.

That's good news. The strange thing is that Mr. Poon is basically saying Bey Logan is making all of this up. Weird.

I think Peter is doing damage control. Perhaps they wanted to cut costs by not including the commentary and didn't realize how many people wanted them.

I didn't see a commentary listed in any of the pre-order info for the first few titles.
