According to what I have heard, Blackhawk Films offered to release the film to DVD (since David Shepard produced the laserdisc), but Fox didn't let the licensing happen.

Why not a digitally restored transfer of Sunrise with all the extras from the laserdisc ported over to the DVD?

Fox doesn't have quite the silent film library Paramount or Warner Bros. has, but that would make this DVD release more important.

If Fox does release Sunrise, it would be the first studio-owned DVD put out by a studio (Kino has released a few public domain Paramount titles such as "It")

I would buy this film on DVD in a split-second.

Indeed, this should be a high-priority catalog project for Fox's DVD division. I believe Peter Staddon once indicated in one of his HTF chats and/or on this particular board, that Fox definitely had some DVD plans for SUNRISE (1927), but wanted to tie it into an anniversary release. If that's still the case, this is THE year to release it, with 2002 being the film's 75th anniversary and all...
I too would buy the DVD faster than you could blink.

As stated by Peter, the 75th Anniversary of the theatrical release of "Sunrise" is this year and I expect it to be released on dvd by Fox later this year.

    Thanks for the information!

Fox should be proud of the fact that...well, unless WB or Paramount suddenly releases THEIR silents...this will be the first studio-released silent film on DVD.

All other silents have been released by a public domain company, Kino Video, or Blackhawk (there's a few small companies with decent discs, but mostly "indie" silents)

    Bravo, Fox!

This is the one film that I really long for on DVD. I have hoped for this title since I bought my DVD player almost 4 years ago. Fox - You already have the digital master - please release this film this year!

Looking forward to this one. What extras were on the LD? I hope this one gets a nice treatment as the studios have been so neglectful of their silents on DVD...

"What extras were on the LD?"

a choice of two different music scores, ten minutes of out-takes and excerpts from the script.

By the way, Fox Movie Channel is showing "Sunrise" uninterrupted on February 26th at 6:00 p.m. ET and February 27th at 8:00 a.m. ET.

My bad. I thought The Matinee Idol was an early sound film instead of a silent film.

Wow, only one silent film on DVD from a major studio.
Sunrise should definitely be number 2.
