I was wandering if anyone had first hand(ear?) experience with some of the more recent Four Tops remasters. The greatest hits CD I have is several years old and has a very harsh, sizzling sound. Have the recent releases been done from the original master tapes? Or just a re-EQ'd version of the crappy recording I have.

The Four Tops are probably my favorite Motown group; along with Smokey, Temptations, Marvin,.......... you get the idea. But they are in the top two. I'm getting tired of listening to the horrible recording I have, especially since I'm getting more accustomed to the smoother sound of SACD.

Anyway, let me hear some feedback from anyone in the know.

Thanks,
Tim

the motown message boards should give you a great answer
at boards dot motown dot com

and ebay has signed copies too:
Abdul "Duke" Fakir of the Four Tops has signed each booklet of a special limited run of the Four Tops’ double-disc 50th Anniversary Anthology, numbered 1 through 100. Each CD bears the "Universal Collector’s Edition" imprint and a specific number stamp. The two-disc Anthology contains 48 digitally remastered tracks, including all 24 of the Four Tops’ Top 40 pop hits, from "Baby I Need Your Loving" through "When She Was My Girl." This is your opportunity to own an exceptional piece of music history — don’t miss it!

Always thought it was unfair when Motown went to LA in the 70's they did not take the Four Tops with them. I can see at the time the hip groups to take were the Jackson 5 and Temptations, still. Sorry, this was not the subject.

Thanks for the responses. I found some info at that site. It seems the sound quality is hit or miss on most of the tracks. No one had a breakdown of which were good or bad, which didn't help. I may pick up the Ultimate collection and find out for myself. It sounds like a great group of songs. It'd be nice to know I was getting cleaner sound. It would REALLY be nice to have it on SACD, but that's probably big-time wishful thinking on my part.
