I've been importing a lot of DVDs recently and have had some problems with 'forced subtitles'. ( Foreign subs on screen whether you like it or not when you watch the English soundtrack )
Discs with this problem are 'On the Beach' Japanese region 2, 'Fahrenheit 451' French region 2, 'The Snapper' & 'The Van' both Spanish region 2. ( All of these discs include original English and local language dubs )
Anybody know if there's a way of getting rid of the subs?

Apologies for the double thread post, I'm not sure how that happened

It's a licensor thing, to piss people off who import and to aid the technically challenged in the intended country. There are some HTPC programs that at least kill it on SOME discs but can't talk about that here [IMG]

    Sean,

The modified Sony players available in Europe typically can switch those off (I have one myself).

Also, a friend of mine had an early generation Samsung player that would switch them off as well.

    Hope this helps,

    -Christian

    Sean...
Could be worse...the subs could be burned onto the print like the Tartan version of Ring.

Is this Fahrenheit 451 disc the special edition released by MK2? Damn, I didn't know it had forced subs! I need this for my Truffaut collection!

That's rather bad (and irritating) news.
The Truffaut thread had just sparkled my interest for the R2 versions of the Truffaut films (and thanks for that, Jeff!), but I certainly don't want burned-in subtitles!
